{"id":85260,"date":"2021-05-07T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=85260"},"modified":"2021-11-09T09:52:09","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T09:52:09","slug":"spotify-speech-recognition-patent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-speech-recognition-patent\/","title":{"rendered":"Musicians Ask Spotify Abandon Speech Recognition Patent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Image credit: Toru Yamanaka\/AFP\/GETTY IMAGES<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366FF\">Those that have penned the open letter include Tom Morello, Talib Kweli, and DIIV.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotifys-newly-granted-patent-could-allow-the-company-to-monitor-your-speech-to-improve-its-music-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The patent that was filed back in 2018 is a voice recognition system that could detect the emotional state, age, and gender of a person. <\/a>It would then take that information and target the listener with personalised recommendations and personalized advertisements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, such a technology has made some people feel uncomfortable, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/vevo-launches-ai-driven-moods-to-target-ads-to-attitudes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">however, this technology is already being used by companies such as Vevo.<\/a> There is also <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/a-firm-that-uses-ai-to-insert-brands-music-videos-partner-with-red-light-management-and-b-unique-records\/\">an AI owned by Mirriad <\/a>that \u201cscans content for its emotional register moment by moment\u201d allowing for them to place products \u201cexactly the right place at the right time\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-profit company Access Now has sent <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-hits-one-billion-android-installations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a> a letter calling it to abandon its tech. This has now been backed up by several other groups as well as more than 180 musicians, including Rage Against the Machine&#8217;s Tom Morello and rapper Talib Kweli. They have been asking that Spotify publicly abandon the patent and commit to never using it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopspotifysurveillance.org\/letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> letter<\/a> directly addressed to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-many-people-listen-to-spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a> CEO Daniel Ek outlines the five primary concerns with the technology. Stating that Spotify, or any other company that could use it, would manipulate users emotionally, harvest their personal information, and discriminate against Trans and Non-Binary people.
