{"id":84843,"date":"2021-04-15T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=84843"},"modified":"2021-04-15T15:31:31","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T14:31:31","slug":"rap-music-uk-popularity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/rap-music-uk-popularity\/","title":{"rendered":"Rap Music\u2019s Popularity In The UK Has Soared Since 2000, according to BPI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Image credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@nicky_h?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nick Haill <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><span style=\"color: #3366FF\">Rap, hip-hop &amp; grime has seen a massive boost in popularity in the past few decades and become a mainstream genre in the UK.<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The popularity of rap, hip-hop, and grime music in the UK has exploded since the turn of the millennium and accounted for a fifth of all singles listened to last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpi.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Phonographic Industry (BPI)<\/a> has said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK artists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/71jSVPQ6yskfyvWeiwvT5s?si=swjF-JgbRW6WDNzZMSKGSA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S1mba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/4Xi6LSfFqv26XgP9NKN26U?si=Svdu_3h8QrKZpnOqAOuzYQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AJ Tracey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/6Ip8FS7vWT1uKkJSweANQK?si=tIHmWBdoS9eWslQ7KCHHJQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dave<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/2p1fiYHYiXz9qi0JJyxBzN?si=HIP-pTLZRcmphkix1vzyPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skepta<\/a> have all contributed to the genres success, according to the BPI, with each artist achieving 50 million plays across the UK in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BPI has found that titles classified as rap and hip-hop made 22% of all singles consumed last year, this includes streamed tracks. Albums in this genre found success too with a market share of 12.2%, both figures are an all-time high for the genre. In fact the market share is now six times greater than it was in 2000, according to the BPI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last six years rap and hip-hop in the UK has grown consecutively in terms of streams and sales. During 2020 seven of the years 21 number one singles were classified as rap and hip-hop, including tracks by UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/2SrSdSvpminqmStGELCSNd?si=YlRNHdM9R3CA1DlksWhkCQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stormzy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/eminem-drops-surprise-freestyle-attack-us-president-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eminem<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/grammys-2021-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardi B.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of the popularity UK is also mirrored by the rise of UK rap artists who accounted for over a third of all rap and hip-hop singles listened to in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the genres success in the UK, Chief Executive of BPI Geoff Taylor said: \u201cA glimpse of this year\u2019s Brits nominees shows the extent to which rap and hip hop now occupies music\u2019s centre ground.\u201d Adding: \u201cThe genre has exploded in recent years, propelled by artists such as Stormzy, Dave and Little Simz, who are creating a new narrative for British music and are leading a rising wave of British talent that is harnessing the power of streaming to achieve chart success.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rap, hip-hop &amp; grime has seen a massive boost in popularity in the past few decades and become a mainstream genre in the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":84844,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[13,1,11109],"tags":[2453,14818,24916,10773,24917,24918,22656,24913,24919,24912,2495,24914],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v18.4.1 -
