The British public turned to music to alleviate stress, help them sleep better, and for a boredom-buster. A study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/bpi-reveals-that-brits-love-streaming-music-streaming-over-1bn-songs-a-week\/\">BPI,<\/a> the UK record labels association, officially shows the positive impact music had on listener\u2019s moods as the pandemic began to restrict their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of the survey demonstrate the comfort to be found in listening to music. When asked why music proved to be so important to them during <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/alson-spoke-to-us-about-trap-nation-picking-up-his-music-and-being-a-producer-in-lockdown\/\">lockdown,<\/a> 50% responded that they listened to raise their spirits. Almost everyone who turned to music to lessen their <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/mental-health-crisis-as-9-in-10-professional-musicians-in-the-uk-report-struggling-in-the-pandemic\/\">feelings of anxiety<\/a> said that it helped to make them feel less <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/10-self-care-tips-for-musicians-and-producers\/\">stressed<\/a> \u2013 a total of 94%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With society restricted, more people in the UK turned to music. Over a quarter of those surveyed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/bpi-argue-streaming-already-works-better-label-cuts-are-diminishing-artist-profits\/\">BPI <\/a>said their listening habits <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/people-listened-more-than-ever-in-lockdown-but-something-grew-more-than-music\/\">had increased<\/a> compared to before the first national lockdown \u2013 only 11% had listened to less music or none at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/bpi_music\/status\/1380070107632783360\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The relaxing effect of hearing music is highlighted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/british-music-exports-expected-to-hit-1bn-by-2030\/\">report,<\/a> with 42% acknowledging that music helped them to relax or get to sleep. Meanwhile 40% of respondents said music was a key factor in lessening boredom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In what is no doubt a result of enforced <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/interview-with-nubiyan-twist-teaching-music-in-lockdown\/\">remote learning,<\/a> those in the 16-24 year-old age bracket turned to music the most with just under half saying they listened to more music in lockdown. 50% of that group also used music to help them concentrate whilst working or studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive of the BPI, BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bpi.co.uk\/news-analysis\/music-helped-the-uk-get-through-lockdown-new-insights-show\/\">said:<\/a> \u201cMusic has many intrinsic additional benefits, not least in raising spirits and promoting wellbeing, but this new research underscores just how much of a lifeline it\u2019s been for people since lockdown \u2013 inspiring and reassuring us and also helping many of us to work, study and exercise to greater effect. The transformational power of music to improve lives has rarely been more pronounced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full findings of the study will be published in the BPI\u2019s Yearbook, &#8220;All About the Music 2021&#8221; on April 14.
