The elements form the \u2018envelope\u2019 that describes the shape of a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Audio interface: <\/strong>Hardware for recording with a computer that means high-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-best-usb-audio-interfaces-mixers-under-400\/\">recordings.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bit rate: <\/strong>The number of bits per second, measuring the accuracy of a recording, the higher the bit the more detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bouncing:<\/strong> Exporting a track to a format like an mp3 or wav file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clipping:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Clipping? This means more consistent dynamics, by turning down the sound if it goes above a certain level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAW: <\/strong>Digital Audio Workstation \u2013 software like <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/ableton-live-11-is-coming-heres-all-thats-new-in-the-huge-update\/\">Ableton<\/a> Live, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/is-garageband-good-software-for-making-music-in-2021\/\">GarageBand,<\/a> Logic Pro. Used to record audio, mix, make sound effects, and master. Musicians can also compose within DAWs through MIDI devices (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-top-10-best-daws-available-in-2021\/\">Check out our pick of the best 10.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Demo: <\/strong>Recording a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-write-songs-on-guitar\/\">song<\/a> or piece of music as a first example of the project, in preparation for a proper full recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EQ: <\/strong>Equalisation (EQ) is a method of cutting or boosting the levels of specific frequencies within a sound without changing the rest of it, by adjusting the gain (volume) of a sound at selected points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feedback: <\/strong>A high-pitched screech caused when a loop of sound is caused by a signal passing through an amplifier to a microphone and back again. For example, amplifier sound \u2018feeding back\u2019 to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-play-the-greatest-guitar-solo-of-all-time\/\">guitar<\/a> strings that are still vibrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FX: <\/strong>Short for \u2018effects\u2019. Common effects include reverb, chorus, distortion, and flange \u2013 processes or devices applied to a signal to alter its sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gain: <\/strong>How loud a signal is before it goes through an amplifier. Can be another word for volume, and another word for guitar distortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gating: <\/strong>Stopping unwanted noise coming through in a recording by cutting signals below a specified threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Input: <\/strong>The initial part of the recording chain, through a cable such as a Jack, MIDI or USB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jack: <\/strong>A connector. Usually comes in 6mm, 3.5mm mini jack and 2.5mm sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Latency: <\/strong>A delay between input and output of a signal, often in a performer\u2019s headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Loop: <\/strong>A repeated section of a song, often using imported <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/arcade-is-a-synthesizer-looper-sample-store-and-more-all-in-one\/\">samples.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lossless and Lossy files:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Which Is Better MP3 vs FLAC vs WAV? Lossless And Lossy Audio Explained\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A0tHcFYq5C0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mastering: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-a-free-mastering-plugin-that-tames-your-peaks\/\">Mastering<\/a> means making sure the music sounds consistent over all music formats and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-producers-are-mastering-tracks-for-music-streaming-services-video\/\">platforms.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MIDI: <\/strong>Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Data and notes recorded with software and electronic instruments. The notes recorded by a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-tech-creators-around-the-world-celebrate-midi-at-distance-for-midi-month-this-may\/\">MIDI<\/a> keyboard are recorded in a DAW as MIDI notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mixing: <\/strong>Combing multiple recorded sounds together, blending to change the levels for a balanced and interesting track. A <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-best-audio-gear-for-mixing-music\/\">master mix <\/a>is the final result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Panning: <\/strong>Placing a sound in the left or right <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/jbl-announce-a-new-soundbar-bluetooth-speaker-headphones-and-earbuds\/\">speaker.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plugin: <\/strong>Software to extend your <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-5-best-daws-for-music-production-and-recording-2020\/\">DAW<\/a> with extra effects, processing or instrumentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reverb: <\/strong>Reflection of sounds from surfaces; the sound of a room. More reverb can be added electronically with a plug-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sample: <\/strong>A short pre-recorded sound, taken from one recording and used in another. The smallest unit of measurement in digital sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sequencer: <\/strong>A MIDI sequencer can be used to record and edit a performance without using an audio-based input source. It doesn\u2019t record the actual audio but the data \u2013 what note was played at what time, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tempo: <\/strong>The speed of music. In BPM (beats per minute), 60BPM for example is one beat a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tracking: <\/strong>Recording songs, on computer, recorder or tape. In a DAW, tracks contain audio and MIDI layers. Each <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/whats-the-easiest-musical-instrument-to-learn-how-to-play\/\">instrument<\/a> gets its own track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Velocity: <\/strong>The force at which a note is played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VST: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-best-audio-gear-for-mixing-music\/\">VST<\/a> stands for Virtual Studio Technology \u2013 plug-ins to bring extra instruments and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-5-best-free-vst-mixing-and-mastering-plugins\/\">effects<\/a> into DAWs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Waveform: <\/strong>A soundwave\u2019s shape, displayed on an oscilloscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wet\/Dry: <\/strong>A dry signal is a pure unprocessed sound, like a vocal recorded as is. A wet signal is a sound with effects on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>XLR: <\/strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/shure-unveil-their-new-home-and-studio-podcast-microphone-mv7\/\">microphone<\/a> cable, with three prongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s just the tiniest tip of the iceberg, but don&#8217;t be intimidated by <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/alson-spoke-to-us-about-trap-nation-picking-up-his-music-and-being-a-producer-in-lockdown\/\">music producer<\/a> jargon.
