New reports show Apple Podcasts may soon follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last two years, Spotify have funnelled resources into their podcast platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-podcasts-is-now-available-on-alexa-outside-of-the-us\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">adding new features<\/a> and exclusive shows from personalities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-sign-spotify-podcast-deal\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Prince Harry and Meghan Markle<\/a>. Investments are seeing results in user growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-podcasts-represents-42-of-all-podcast-listeners-as-of-q2-2020-according-to-midia\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">as according to a survey, 42% of all podcast listens come from Spotify.<\/a> Spotify&#8217;s next real challenge is properly monetizing these shows to see a return on their investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Spotify&#8217;s Podcast empire has continued to grow, Apple have also stepped up efforts with <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-may-bring-apple-music-and-apple-podcasts-to-windows-and-xbox-soon\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">new features<\/a>, acquiring <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-have-acquired-scout-fm-a-voice-powered-podcast-discovery-startup\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">networks<\/a> and producing exclusive audio content that ties in with their original Apple TV+ shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SiriusXM and Amazon are also hoping to compete in the race, with SiriusXM purchasing podcast networks such as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/siriusxm-acquires-podcasting-company-simplecast\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Simplecast<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/with-the-acquisition-completed-stitcher-podcasts-are-now-available-on-pandora\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Stitcher, implementing shows on Pandora,<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-sony-and-two-other-companies-are-reportedly-in-talks-with-acquiring-podcast-network-wondery\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Amazon acquiring Wondery network last month for an undisclosed amount likely over $300 million.<\/a> While Amazon may have been later to the podcast game than others, their audiobook platform Audible have completely dominated this sector of spoken work content for years. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/audible-launch-audible-plus-a-cheaper-unlimited-listening-plan\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">The company recently launched Audible Originals to Audible subscribers,<\/a> growing their platform further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2021\/01\/17\/apple-podcast-subscription-premium\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Digital Music News<\/a> detail some interesting statistics on recent podcast listening in the US, claiming spoken word listening now accounts for 26% of all listening by those aged 13+, a 3% rise over 2019. The article also states 55% of the entire US population are listening to at least one podcast, and 54% saying they&#8217;ve listened to at least one audiobook.
