In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotify-in-car-music-player-is-coming-competing-with-apple-google-and-amazon-in-car-services\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">the company confirmed they were looking at developing an in-car Bluetooth music player they called Car Thing,<\/a> with prototypes sent to some users. In January last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-a-sneak-peek-at-spotifys-voice-controlled-mini-gadget\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Spotify updated their FCC filing with photos of the small gadget,<\/a> showing a small screen with what&#8217;s playing and physical buttons to control playback. In August last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/it-seems-spotify-are-still-experimenting-with-creating-their-own-devices\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">we saw Spotify post a job ad for <i>Head of <\/i><\/a><span style=\"user-select: auto;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/it-seems-spotify-are-still-experimenting-with-creating-their-own-devices\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\"><i>Hardware Commercial Development,<\/i><\/a><\/span> with specfic expertises in the &#8220;automotive area&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whie the company is still yet to confirm plans of the official release of such a device, <a href=\"https:\/\/fccid.io\/2AP3D-YX5H6679\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">a new FCC filing for Spotify&#8217;s Car Thing<\/a> shows a totally redesigned device. With a larger display and thin profile, the product looks to be smartphone sized with a large dial and button to the right of the display. The filing describes the item as &#8220;a voice controlled accessory for phone\/Spotify App with supporting display and buttons. Bluetooth enabled for communication with the Car Head Unit. The majority of input is thought to be voice controlled. Spotify&#8217;s Car Thing looks set to compete with the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Echo-Auto-Add-Alexa-your\/dp\/B07VTK654B\/ref=sr_1_2?crid=20MP1IPCT0DTT&amp;dchild=1&amp;keywords=echo%2Bauto&amp;qid=1611058732&amp;sprefix=auto%2Caps%2C244&amp;sr=8-2&amp;th=1\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Amazon with their voice controlled Echo Auto,<\/a> as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto who run software over hardware from the likes of JVC, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now know the design, size, purpose and basics of how the device works. We are still waiting for an idea about the software it&#8217;s running or user interface.
