Jazz is built upon live performance and interaction between players. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the genre also has deep foundations of improvisation and reinvention, and jazz musicians will be just as tenacious and creative over these changing times as they have been all along. Here are eight jazz artists to explore as they launch <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/new-music-to-watch-out-for-in-2021\/\">new projects in 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Johanna\nBurnheart <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johanna Burnheart - Silence is Golden (official music video)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l1I6o9O-R6A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A newly-emerged German jazz violinist, vocalist and composer based in London, Burnheart was the first jazz violin undergraduate student at Guildhall School of Music and Drama when she enrolled there in 2013. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her work on debut album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/4CglxD7ug0JxfTEJeNweuk?si=2Rls8rqkRzeUCrfBTTXPtw\">Burnheart<\/a> <\/em>mashes together the inspirations of modal jazz and Berlin techno, taking the violin to new mind-bendingly experimental places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Charlotte Dos Santos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Charlotte Dos Santos - Josef (Visualizer)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FsMw7PP2LNQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>EP <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/6iNSDiUKMa2QgV3fEGHp39?si=bEsD2TWcS-iQzIkg2hOccw\">Harvest Time<\/a> <\/em>is out now from the Brazilian-Norweigan singer, a mystical mix of jazz and neo-soul. Latin-American rhythms playful lie over the RnB beat of &#8220;Helio&#8221; and in the flamenco flutterings of &#8220;Padre,&#8221; and Dos Santos\u2019 jazz vocal soars above them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Puma Blue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Puma Blue - Silk Print (Official Video)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cLqcviyoOBs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutting a solitary figure, Puma Blue&#8217;s smooth voice croons soulfully over crisply produced lazy guitar, electronic beats and tinkering piano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After slowly circling the edge of the London Jazz scene for a few years, his debut album due for release in February 2021 will no doubt introduce him to a wider audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>ARTEMIS <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ARTEMIS - Frida\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JAe6RTTTdd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ARTEMIS is an international jazz supergroup of seven women at the top of their musical game: pianist and founder Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, drummer Allison Miller, vocalist C\u00e9cile McLorin Salvant, tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, clarinetist Anat Cohen and bassist Noriko Ueda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spanning generations and nationalities, they <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2NHS9RKnUaFqVU13hHgDAP?si=NXeIIhy3QLObKiNBg3p2JQ\">released their self-titled debut <\/a>in 2020, a collection of covers and originals that features their individual sounds complimenting each other with astonishing ease. It would be a headache logistically for the group to arrange a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/uk-touring-musicians-have-been-forgotten-in-the-brexit-deal\/\">live tour<\/a> even in non-pandemic times, but just imagine the awe-inspiring outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Georgia Cecile<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Georgia C\u00e9cile - &quot;Always Be Right&quot; [Official Video]\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x68GuJH9t5Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Georgia C\u00e9cile - \"Always Be Right\" [Official Video]\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominated for Jazz FM\u2019s Vocalist of the Year 2020. After Covid left them <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/artist-support-pandemic\/\">unemployed<\/a> they moved out of London and took jobs helping elderly and vulnerable people across the UK, leading them to contribute the poignant &#8220;Lose My Mind&#8221; to Fearne Cotton\u2019s <em>Happy Place <\/em>compilation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep an eye out for whatever fresh sounds they have in store for us in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Keleketla<\/strong>!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Keleketla! - &#039;Future Toyi Toyi (Edit)&#039; (Official Audio)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S8SxFMU11wc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/livestreams-have-grown-more-than-200-on-youtube-in-2020\/\">Coldcut<\/a>, creators of the Ninja Tune record label, partnered with South African musicians to make a record for the In Place of War charity, and <a href=\"https:\/\/keleketla.bandcamp.com\/album\/keleketla\">Keleketla! is the result.<\/a> A dizzying array of styles, gqom beats and Afrobeat drums, built up from a jazz foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this album as a jumping-off point to discover the treasure trove of artists who <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-power-of-music-collaboration\/\">gathered to create it.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Moses Boyd<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Moses Boyd - Stranger Than Fiction (Official Video)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/va31cQzbV18?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Drummer Moses Boyd\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-award-shows-are-fighting-to-stay-relevant-in-2020\/\">Mercury Prize-nominated<\/a> debut album saw him cement his place firmly at the top of the London jazz scene. This year Boyd will continue to create and collaborate and when the world allows him to perform <i><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/4XRA7yDYWSkO5BMvZinESW?si=jgvi7m3wQ8-XizwTyrljfw\">Dark\u00a0Matter<\/a><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/4XRA7yDYWSkO5BMvZinESW?si=jgvi7m3wQ8-XizwTyrljfw\">,<\/a> a stand-out album of 2020 and a masterful combination of electronic jazz and Afrobeat, it will be well worth the wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>A year is a long time, and hopefully <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/live-nation-festivals-return-2021\/\">live jazz will return before long<\/a>, with performers back in their rightful place interacting with bandmates and enthralled audiences.
