{"id":82666,"date":"2021-01-14T12:01:10","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=82666"},"modified":"2021-01-14T12:01:10","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T12:01:10","slug":"new-folk-music-for-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/new-folk-music-for-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"New Folk Music for 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@zekeriya\">Image&nbsp;Credit:&nbsp;Zekeriya&nbsp;Sen<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4><span style=\"color:#3366FF\"> From classic UK folk music to bluegrass, we\u2019ve found nine new folk artists to get excited about in 2021.<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Folk music thrives from <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-power-of-music-collaboration\/\">collaboration,<\/a> which has been something of a logistical challenge over the past year; but it\u2019s also a genre built upon storytelling, and stories are something that can be told and heard anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music festivals are <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/festival-season-2021-cancelled\/\">optimistically announcing their lineups<\/a> and debut <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/best-albums-of-2020\/\">albums<\/a> are still being released. These nine musicians, well-established but innovative folk musicians and new emerging artists, need to be kept a watchful eye on in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Matilda Mann<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Matilda Mann - As It Is [Official Video]\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ren5a0L2nn4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Acoustic guitar-led indie folk heavily influenced by Laura\nMarling. Mann lends her pretty, sweet voice to uplifting folk-pop tunes with passionate\nlyrics that let listeners know they\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Leyla McCalla <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Leyla McCalla - &#039;Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes&#039; [Live at Tigermen&#039;s Den 2020]\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Bna7_q8clPI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The brilliant singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, based in New Orleans, generated a hum of interest last year with the reissue of her 2014 debut album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1FvfDlxSDXlO3SQ8JrwxfI?si=2uig03roQI-N3HBNMfTKlw\">Vari-Colored Songs: a Tribute to Langston<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1FvfDlxSDXlO3SQ8JrwxfI?si=2uig03roQI-N3HBNMfTKlw\">.<\/a> The album mixes traditional Haitian folk songs with Hughes\u2019 jazz poems, while exposing the relevance of Hughes\u2019 work to today&#8217;s attitudes around Black culture. On the album McCalla seems to also reappraise her own career, looking back whilst heading in a fresh new direction. With a new project in the works, it\u2019ll be a thrill to see what form that direction takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Lyre<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brooklyn In The Rain - Lyre\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G-6fEWBpICs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternative folk group Lyre are singer-songwriter Bryony Lewis and producer Joe Boon, who had known each other for six years before they joined forces. <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3tHAkZwHOm1415inFGlJYF?si=5ULBn2VbQj-HjDwj9zh9pg\">Debut EP <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3tHAkZwHOm1415inFGlJYF?si=5ULBn2VbQj-HjDwj9zh9pg\">I Wasn\u2019t Scared, I Was Just Somebody Else<\/a> <\/em>came out in 2020, with another EP on the horizon. The duo specialise in intimate harmonies and contemplative melodies. It\u2019s music to walk through misty fields to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Jake Blount<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jake Blount - Roustabout\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nKdlclWxOpw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The US banjoist, singer and fiddle player centres the experiences of queer people and people of colour in his music. Taking sharp aim at the commercialisation of Black music by the American Roots music industry, Blount undertook massive research into African American and Indigenous mountain music, and the tracks that make up his <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3S2GACXwN1hHxSKHxkGvKb?si=Nlfq4dDfTderms-jzbsI_w\">debut album <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3S2GACXwN1hHxSKHxkGvKb?si=Nlfq4dDfTderms-jzbsI_w\">Spider Tales<\/a> <\/em>are the result. It\u2019s a deep dive into the brushed-aside origins of Black and Indigenous folk songwriting and the hardship ingrained within, but offered in an open and accessible way \u2013 the remarkable music is often foot-stomping and always inspiring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Talisk<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Talisk - Dystopia (LIVE)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2432sMhkNuU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Scottish trio who blend effortlessly together to make invigorating, exhilarating folk music. After spending 2020 performing virtually, this year will hopefully see their rightful return to the stage. Featuring Hayley Keenan\u2019s fiddle playing, Graeme Armstrong on guitar, and concertina player Mohsen Amini who was the youngest ever winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Musician of the year award in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Br\u00ecghde Chaimbeul<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Br\u00ecghde Chaimbeul Sunday Lunch Live Session (YOSA) Scottish Bagpipe\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E-k5HL0Mjdo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A young master of the Scottish smallpipes from the Isle of Skye, and one of the few women in the male-dominated world of piping. Her 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/03lvwQuiJRyQL8LT8CN4Pv?si=qBfG9PC0QgS3Z9hBYALDHA\">debut album <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/03lvwQuiJRyQL8LT8CN4Pv?si=qBfG9PC0QgS3Z9hBYALDHA\">The Reeling<\/a><\/em> is full of enriching and haunting songs, and the native Gaelic speaker has kept playing through lockdown, releasing recordings and content <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/brichaimbeul\">via Patreon<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Lizzie Reid<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lizzie Reid - Always Lovely [Live Acoustic]\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Eg-TDQb06dY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Emerging Dubin talent Reid shows shades of Laura Marling in her swooping melodies and guitar playing that is delicate one moment and lively the next. Newly signed to label Seven Four Seven Six, her debut EP \u2018Cubicle\u2019 arrives in February.
