Here&#8217;s a selection of the best songs from the past 12 months. <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this year of turmoil and activism, music has been constant throughout, pulling us along, a distraction and a comfort. Songs that were never meant to reference the year have hit a new nerve, and music written in response to current events made us feel less overwhelmed. It\u2019s currently been streamed 1.8 billion times on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-upload-my-music-to-spotify-yes-and-its-free\/\" style=\"user-select: auto;\">Spotify<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Beyonc\u00e9 \u2013 Black Parade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/Tinhb9l6PIc\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dropped on Juneteenth, the US holiday marking the end of slavery, this surprise release saw Bey opening her arms, gathering her people into her \u2018hive\u2019, and then ushering them out onto the streets. \u2018Being black is your activism\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/jun\/20\/beyonce-releases-surprise-new-song-black-parade-on-juneteenth\">she posted alongside<\/a>, stating that money raised would be donated to Black-owned businesses. With a call to Black self-expressionism, African references are peppered throughout, over a cyclical beat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>beabadoobee \u2013 Charlie Brown<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Charlie Brown\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n2Cuca6ISzQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>beabadoobee channels her emotions through a new kind of grunge. The track stares down the ghouls of corruption with a steady gaze, stating \u2018we will never show fear\u2019 through a memorable melody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion \u2013 WAP<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cardi B - WAP feat. There\u2019s no room for doubt here \u2013 it\u2019s a defining moment for Black female empowerment as the two heavyweights join forces, laying out exactly what they want, with no need to offer an explanation as to why they deserve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Arlo Parks \u2013 Hurt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Arlo Parks - Hurt (Official Video)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2qz4cAAwtv0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the lurking burr of saxophone and a chomping drumbeat, the calm vocal addresses the character of Charlie in the song and also the listener, beckoning out hope.
