Here are 10 of the best game soundtracks that we\u2019ve heard this year.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Great video game music is seamless. As you play, the soundtrack draws no attention to itself \u2013 sometimes you almost don\u2019t notice it\u2019s there at all, but it influences your emotional response to the gameplay. Then when the music swells in a cutscene it nudges the narrative along, letting you sit back and be swept along with the drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 gaming provided the escape we all needed. Who cared if we couldn\u2019t go outside or see any other humans? A few examples follow of some of the most interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/40-years-of-game-music-in-2-minutes-video\/\">game soundtracks<\/a> of the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Ghost of Tsushima<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ghost of Tsushima (Music from the Video Game) | Full Album\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WTilIIzSea4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This action-adventure game mirrors the visuals and narratives of samurai films, and the soundtrack is no different, with composers Ilan Eshkeri and Shigeru Umebayashi striving to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/culture\/2020\/07\/31\/general\/ghost-of-tsushima-soundtrack\/\">authentically reflect<\/a> the music of feudal Japan under Mongol invasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quieter moments featuring trembling, breathy pipes and the twanging of traditional Japanese biwa sit amongst dramatic swooping strings and booming drums. It\u2019s a listening experience that immerses you completely in the open world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Tony Hawk\u2019s Pro Skater 1 + 2<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Tony Hawk&amp;apos;s Pro Skater 1 + 2\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/37i9dQZF1DX6F6y6vVLZ8H?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s right, 90\u2019s kids \u2013 he&#8217;s back. Combining the two greatest Tony Hawk games, the remastered release offers a throwback to 1999, a simpler time when \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/EK_LN3XEcnw\">Mambo No.5<\/a>\u2019 dominated the singles chart and we were all scared of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-45083650\">the Millennium Bug<\/a>. Let muscle memory kick in and you\u2019ll be 360ing all over the Hangar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The skater punk soundtrack is given a refresher with original tracks like \u2018Guerrilla Radio\u2019 by Rage Against the Machine and \u2018Cyclone\u2019 by Dub Pistols returning <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-new-soundtrack-revealed\/\">alongside new songs<\/a> including \u2018bloody valentine\u2019 by Machine Gun Kelly. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.playstation.com\/2020\/07\/28\/over-three-dozen-new-music-tracks-added-to-tony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-soundtrack\/\">soundtrack was collated to represent<\/a> \u2018five decades of skating \u2013 from the 80\u2019s all the way to the hits of today \u2013 from over a half dozen countries and genres\u2019. A delicious hit of nostalgia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><i>The Last of Us Part II<\/i><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gustavo Santaolalla - The Last of Us Part II (from The Last of Us Part II)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3lBhk5jjJu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who also provided music for The Last of Us, scored to the story components rather than to the picture for this post-apocalyptic smash-hit game series, so rather than the characters telling the player what they\u2019re feeling, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2020\/08\/20\/last-us-part-ii-music\/\">soundtrack<\/a> speaks for them. Trembling banjo brings the feelings of wildness, cutting to electronic elements for horror effects with pounding percussion ramping up tension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile in-game <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/learn-guitar-with-ellie-in-the-last-of-us-2\/\">a guitar is used as thematic device<\/a>, with various covers played by the characters. In one stand-out scene, protagonist Ellie plays <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JeHRqAu2DC0\">a cover of A-Ha\u2019s \u2018Take On Me\u2019<\/a> for her girlfriend, Dina, cementing their bond. The emotion here is almost more important than the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cyberpunk 2077 \u2013 NCPD Prowl by Marcin Przyby\u0142owicz\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mlTfn0eDIGk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Full marks for ambition here. The OST is absolutely crammed with big names. Transmitted through fictional radio stations a la <em>Watchdogs: Legion<\/em> as you whizz around the dystopian megalopolis of Night City, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/51403\/1\/all-the-best-tracks-from-the-cyberpunk-2077-soundtrack\">all the artists <\/a>have pseudonyms to prevent any real-world jarring. Run the Jewels are \u2018Yankee and the Brave\u2019 and Grimes, who appears in-game, is pop star Lizzy Wizzy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/thepitch\/inside-the-star-studded-soundtrack-to-cyberpunk-2077\/\">The score<\/a>, meanwhile, is grittier than the smooth neon \u201880s feel of future worlds such as <em>Blade Runner<\/em>, with Marcin Przyby\u0142owicz providing a soundtrack of heavy electronica and acid techno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ori and the Will of the Wisps \u2013 Official Soundtrack \u2013 Magical Forest Ambience\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xGJvfAunm98?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With a darker feel than the first Ori adventure, but no less heartfelt, the music of this game alone will make you emotional. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockpapershotgun.com\/2020\/03\/04\/the-secrets-of-ori-and-the-will-of-the-wisps-incredible-music\/\">A huge, bold score<\/a> by Gareth Coker accompanies the dashing and hopping of the little guy as he streaks through the game, encountering animal characters who each have their own theme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Epic choir and orchestra passages accompany soaring dramatic races through the sky and sit alongside Celtic folk elements with fiddles and whistles as the player bounces through the inky forest. A soundtrack as beautiful as the visuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Theme Song Performance - Nintendo Switch\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lWKdsawDSvU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving into a world that needed escapism and comfort <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2020\/04\/21\/animal-crossing-soundtrack-is-an-unlikely-lullaby-nervous-world\/\">more than ever<\/a>, it was lucky that the life-simulation game featured a matching gentle, mood-boosting soundtrack. Kazumi Totaka has composed for Nintendo since 1992 and was responsible for the Wii menu music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bright, cheerful and uncomplicated electronic beats accompany players on their islands as they go about their daily business at the turnip market \u2013 able to live a stable life in one reality, at least. Press play, and go to your happy place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Star Wars: Squadrons<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gordy Haab - Main Theme (From &quot;Star Wars: Squadrons&quot;\/Audio Only)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9AfEpPu932c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Gordy Haab - Main Theme (From \"Star Wars: Squadrons\"\/Audio Only)\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The action in this fighter pilot game never lets up and neither does the soundtrack. Gordy Haab\u2019s orchestral score harks back to the original Star Wars theme with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2020\/10\/star-wars-squadrons-composer-interview\/\">a fresh new feel<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a strong interactive element \u2013 depending on who you play as and with the outcome of each battle able to go to either the Imperial or Rebel side, the music switches depending on which side has the upper hand. The music was also recorded in lockdown, with the individual recordings of the 60-piece orchestra stitched together in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Ikenfell<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Ikenfell (Original Game Soundtrack)\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/4C3VSYa8oyZB5bOZ27f5Go?si=TqBjrFv1SieSZ1C2WyiqKg&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a dazzling array of different styles and genres throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/panm360.com\/en\/records\/ikenfell-original-game-soundtrack\/\">soundtrack<\/a> to the wizard-school RPG, all written by <i>Steven Universe<\/i> music duo pianist Aivi Tran and chip musician Steven \u2018Surasshu\u2019 Velema, with additional tracks by their friend Sabrielle Augustin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of nods to classic 8-bit soundtracks in the form of the buzz of synths, in keeping with the retro graphics. Sometimes there are sing-song piano lines. When there\u2019s vocals, there might be close harmonies in a Disney musical fashion, or a frenetic hyper-pop feel, other times characters rap over electric guitar and an electro beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Crash Bandicoot 4: It\u2019s About Time<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crash Bandicoot\u2122 4: It\u2019s About Time \u2013 Official Soundtrack\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s7gd6AxaOTM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another nostalgia-hit as the legendary \u201890s character returns for a fourth platformer. To match the quirky, colourful game, the instruments were recorded live then mixed with electronic effects. There\u2019s new locations and that means new musical themes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Composer Walter Mair<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waltermair.com\/crash-bandicoot-its-about-time\/\">revealed<\/a> that industrial sounds were recorded in a quarry for the Wasteland levels, and prehistoric levels feature recordings of primitive instruments like bone flutes. And of course, those classic marimba runs are back too, scurrying around like Crash himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><i>Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE - Original Soundtrack Promotional Video\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C9n_dKP1eTU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The remade 1997 classic was named Best Score and Music at the Game Awards 2020. The composers Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Mitsuto Suzukis ought to blend nostalgia with a fresh new sound. Sampling some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/listen-to-final-fantasy-soundtracks-on-apple-music-and-spotify-worldwide\/\">original songs<\/a>, the soundtrack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-soundtrack-154531230.html\">includes multiple genres including rock, and dance music<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where the story diverts from the original, so too does the music. And the soundtrack changes seamlessly as the player moves through different scenes with an interactive score as in <em>Star Wars: Squadron<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>There we have it \u2013 ten very different soundtracks from a very different year, in which the music and gaming worlds began to merge and collaborate in increasingly interesting ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual concert events drew big numbers and artists appeared in-game \u2013 just as Grimes popped up in Cyberpunk 2077, rapper Stormzy played a character in <em>Watch Dogs: Legion<\/em>. Travis Scott performing on <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/youtubers-using-fortnites-travis-scott-performances-this-weekend-have-30-days-until-theyre-claimed\/\">Fortnite<\/a> gained millions of views. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile kids gaming platform <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/make-beats-in-roblox-with-new-splash-music-maker\/\">Roblox<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/musically.com\/2020\/07\/23\/roblox-head-of-music-tells-labels-and-artists-were-open-for-business\/\">huge plans<\/a> for further virtual concerts following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/11\/16\/21570454\/lil-nas-x-roblox-concert-33-million-views\">massive success<\/a> of the Lil Nas X virtual performance.
