{"id":77972,"date":"2020-12-15T15:00:53","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=77972"},"modified":"2021-11-30T12:09:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T12:09:47","slug":"record-labels-keep-half-of-profits-from-music-streaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/record-labels-keep-half-of-profits-from-music-streaming\/","title":{"rendered":"Record labels keep half of profits from music streaming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Image Credit: <i><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@yannispap?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText\">Yannis Papanastasopoulos<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"color:#3366FF\"> More surprises at the second session of the UK government\u2019s inquiry into the economics of music streaming, featuring Nile Rodgers.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The appearance of Nile Rodgers on <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/work\/646\/economics-of-music-streaming\/\">the inquiry panel<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/378\/digital-culture-media-and-sport\">DCMS<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrTomGray\/status\/1334605240105103362\">announced like a Glastonbury headliner<\/a>. After all, why would a global star care about the dry subject of the economics of streaming for UK musicians? When asked that very question, Rodgers replied: &#8220;I feel that the UK is one of the most important musical engines in the world&#8221; \u2013 and <span>the point of the inquiry is to get fairer payments to the musicians who <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-by-numbers-2020-report\/\">keep that engine running<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/do-the-economics-of-music-streaming-mean-even-established-musicians-cant-pay-the-rent\/\">previous session on the 24th November<\/a> had focussed on the issue of payments from streaming services, this one took aim at the monetary split between record labels, artists and publishers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chic guitarist was giving evidence alongside songwriter <span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/4WhEPAXkhVLP0PSyBkWHSq?si=NJXmfP1aTpOmy9eyc4lMYA\">Fiona Bevan<\/a><\/span> and <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2019\/nov\/21\/sax-riots-and-racism-the-radical-jazz-of-soweto-kinch\">Soweto Kinch<\/a><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/juuNU8yeYWk\">MC<\/a> and jazz saxophonist. <span>The overall message of the debate was that whilst the streaming issue is presented as being something complex, fixing the problem might not be complicated at all.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably you\u2019re wondering why you should <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/work\/646\/economics-of-music-streaming\/\">watch the sessions<\/a> \u2013 if you\u2019re a musician then the inquiry is essentially about making sure you\u2019re paid fairly when someone listens to your tracks; if you\u2019re a consumer of music on any streaming platform then you have a right to know who is benefiting from the playlists you click on, especially if you\u2019re keen to support your favourite artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst Nile Rodgers stressed that &#8220;I don\u2019t look at my record label partners as enemies, I look at them as my friends,&#8221; the streaming inquiry is investigating the fact that as it stands, the money from about 50% of the streams of a Spotify user goes to record labels, 30% stays at the platform and less than 10% goes to the performers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are alternatives for independents, of course \u2013 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routenote.com\/signup_page\/design\">distributing with Routenote<\/a><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routenote.com\/signup_page\/design\"> <\/a><\/b><span>artists can go their own way<\/span> and, rather than having to split streaming and download profits with a record label, can <span><span>keep<\/span><\/span> either 85% or 100% of all the revenues they make. But generally many artists feel there is<span> no room at the table <\/span>for musicians to make their voices heard, and Rodgers effectively called for CEOs and music artists to <span>sit down as adults<\/span> and be honest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodgers has sold an estimated <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/1NpPWjGP5Kt2dsfWtG9yGQl\/7-songs-you-never-knew-were-made-by-nile-rodgers\">500 million records worldwide<\/a><\/span>, so the fact he showed up at all proved he\u2019s eager to use his influence to address an issue that affects him far less than other artists. Despite being on US time he cared enough to &#8220;get up at 5 am, which if you know anything about musicians, was only about an hour after I went to sleep.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s simple, he cheerfully told the MPs, <span>transparency<\/span> is all that\u2019s needed: &#8220;If you can help us to make this happen, things would change and I guarantee you that, two years down the road, everybody is going to be fine and happy because we are going to experience explosive growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as in the first hearing, Rodgers suggested that equitable remuneration would help \u2013 treating streams like radio broadcasts, with royalties split 50\/50 between artists and labels. He also made time for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/nile-rodgers-on-working-with-michael-jackson-were-weird-guys-118650\/\">casual <\/a><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/nile-rodgers-on-working-with-michael-jackson-were-weird-guys-118650\/\">name-dropping<\/a><\/span>, remembering chats with Michael Jackson and admitting to having &#8220;nothing but flops until I met David Bowie.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,<b> <\/b>Fiona Bevan presented a case for hit songwriters, saying the inquiry into the economics of streaming is &#8220;a<b> <\/b>huge, wonderful opportunity for the UK to become world leaders in how you fix this.&#8221; Bevan, who this year has written for <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/streaming-startup-secures-funding\/\">Kylie Minogue<\/a> and Steps, admitted that she had &#8220;a track on an album that was recently No.1 in the album charts in the UK\u2026 the fastest-selling solo artist album of the year. That track has earned me about \u00a3100.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Multiple credits on a song <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-split-royalties-between-artists-producers-vocalists-and-more\/\">split royalties still further<\/a><\/span>, and &#8220;the vast majority of music in the charts is <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-power-of-music-collaboration\/\">written through collaborations and teams<\/a>. Pop songwriters, the most successful songwriters in the world, cannot pay their rent.&#8221; She said she had great hope for the future but <span>called f<\/span>or a levelling out so that \u2018the song itself is valued: the lyrics, the melody, the beautiful chords.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the harrowing statistics, just like in the previous session all the speakers had only positive things to say about streaming as a resource<b>.<\/b> Streaming has educated the general public that music shouldn\u2019t be free to download. Rodgers said that despite the murkiness around <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-often-do-routenote-send-out-statistics-and-payments\/\">payments<\/a> from streams on the platforms, &#8220;it is <span>fantastic<\/span> that they can distribute our product in such an effective, wonderful way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>With pressure to get on playlists and the fact that <span>streams pay out the same regardless of the length of the track<\/span>, there is<span> less of an incentive<\/span><b> <\/b><span>to make &#8220;complicated&#8221; records<\/span>. Soweto Kinch spoke about the effect today\u2019s streaming model has on more specialist music genres, and also the effect on creativity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way Kinch as an independent <span>jazz musician<\/span> makes an album is &#8220;quite a hefty investment, and you\u2019re only going to get a sliver of that back on your royalties.&#8221; If musicians can\u2019t make a living from streaming it would have &#8220;lasting effects on the type of content that this country produces.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He <span>approves of a user-centric model of streaming \u2013 only paying for what you stream<\/span> \u2013 as he knows that &#8220;jazz musicians and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/5-tips-to-engage-with-fans-on-soundcloud-and-beyond\/\">fans<\/a> can be particularly loyal and attached to a particular aesthetic, and I think that deserves its own model of remuneration.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely streaming services should have a <span>legal obligation<\/span><b> <\/b>to make it clear to artists and composers exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-much-money-does-a-play-make-on-music-streaming-services-2020\/\">how much they are owed<\/a>? Again, Nile Rodgers hammered home the need for transparency: &#8220;I want to <span>know what the hell a stream is worth<\/span>. Just show me the number, so I could sit down with my accountants.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem, the panel claimed, is that Non-disclosure Agreements make it almost impossible to know the true streaming rates. Even someone as massive as Nile Rogers is subject to NDAs, with <span>no chance to negotiate deals<\/span> \u2013 he has a bit more leverage, but &#8220;with all of these relationships between the labels under NDA, we don\u2019t even know what a stream is worth. Does anyone?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a pretty eye-opening debate. Much of the sitting trod familiar ground from the November session, but as the MPs are building a case for parliament, it was important to gather as much good evidence as possible. There were some great lines that will definitely make it into the final report. As Rodgers urged: \u2018Now is the perfect time to fix this stuff.
