Set in the psychedelic 1960s in the same universe as his other novel <em>Cloud Atlas<\/em>, the novel is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/jul\/10\/utopia-avenue-by-david-mitchell-review-a-musical-journey\">presented as a series of albums<\/a> composed of songs devoted to each character. It\u2019s peppered with pop culture and historical references from the swinging sixties, writing that\u2019s full of energy and every bandmate drama you can imagine. Groovy, baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Honorary mention for <em>Daisy Jones and the Six<\/em> by Taylor Jenkins Reid \u2013 out in paperback this year, the novel follows another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oprahmag.com\/entertainment\/a30460831\/daisy-jones-and-the-six-tv-show-cast-release-date-trailer\/\">fictional band<\/a> with much in common with Fleetwood Mac.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass <\/em>by Lana Del Rey (Simon &amp; Schuster)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"587\" height=\"900\" src=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/violet-bent-backwards-over-the-grass-9781471199660_xlg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63035 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/violet-bent-backwards-over-the-grass-9781471199660_xlg.jpg 587w, https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/violet-bent-backwards-over-the-grass-9781471199660_xlg-294x450.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The poems are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I\u2019m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.<\/p><cite>Lana Del Rey<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always interesting to see the difference between artists\u2019 lyrics and their poetry. This collection features 30 of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/radiohead-suing-lana-del-rey-creep-got-sued\/\">Del Rey\u2019s<\/a> poems and\u2026 if you like Lana Del Rey, you\u2019ll like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past she\u2019s referred to herself as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/jul\/29\/lana-del-rey-poetry-debut-review-violet-bent-backwards-over-the-grass\">\u201824\/7 Sylvia Plath\u2019<\/a>, so the release was perhaps inevitable. There\u2019s also an <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-and-podcasts-whats-next-for-spotify-audiobooks\/\">audiobook<\/a> available, in which Del Rey reads her poems accompanied by Grammy Award-winning musician Jack Antonoff.
