Here are 8 contenders.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">If there\u2019s one thing everybody excelled at in 2020, it was staring at a screen<strong>.<\/strong> Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and the rest of the gang&nbsp;knew they had us trapped and could have thrown anything at us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Luckily TV shows this year continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/amazon-signs-singer-lizzo-to-create-new-tv-shows\/\">commission<\/a> beautiful, bold and banging soundtracks. Here\u2019s eight of the best soundtracks of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>The Mandalorian\n<\/em>(Disney+)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ludwig G\u00f6ransson | Scoring The Mandalorian | Disney+\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rXJa1YcV6OQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To help ease us through a year of lockdowns Disney+ launched in the UK, and with it came the first two series of a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-music-launch-a-disney-hub-full-of-playlists-albums-and-stations\/\">Star Wars<\/a> spin-off featuring the World\u2019s Greatest (killer) Dad. It also features this year\u2019s best theme tune\u2026 Just try and get that beat out of your head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The composer, Ludwig G\u00f6ransson, was also responsible for the <em>Black Panther<\/em> (2014) and <em>Venom&nbsp;<\/em><span>(2018)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/ludwig-goransson-star-wars-mandalorian-disney-plus-black-panther-oscar-a9199741.html\">soundtracks<\/a>. G\u00f6ransson perfectly captures the feel of a Western set in space, using an array of <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/aQIcZbzr9Wk\">weird and wonderful instruments <\/a>and sound effects. The horns call back to the original Star Wars theme and instantly bring to mind canyons, the vastness of the open desert and the darkness of space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>I May\nDestroy You <\/em>(BBC\/HBO)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: I May Destroy You\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/37i9dQZF1DWUcT0QzTFbgH?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Michaela Coel\u2019s impossible-to-define show takes you from laughter to horror in an instant. To soundtrack the intense portrayal of the lives of young Black Londoners, curator <b>Ciara Elwis<\/b> chose to put a spotlight on rising British acts like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nYRGfdq0so4\">Arlo Parks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/y_DDqg1A8lw\">Greentea Peng<\/a>, alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PaYvlVR_BEc\">Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/a> and other famous names. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tracks mirror the personalities of the characters as Coel\u2019s protagonist tries to piece together what happened on a night out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>His Dark Materials<\/em> (BBC\/HBO) <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"His Dark Materials title sequence - BBC\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uRaT0QXAxCw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another stirring instrumental that unexpectedly burrows its way into your ear for the rest of the week. The second series of the TV adaptation of Philip Pullman\u2019s fantasy books is classic Sunday night family fare, with beautiful visuals and a stellar cast including James McAvoy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/discover-music\/periods-genres\/film-tv\/his-dark-materials-soundtrack-music-composer\/\">The theme<\/a> creeps open with a tick-tocking solo piano, followed by dancing cello and violin before the rest of the strings bring the mysterious-sounding main theme. Composer Lorne Balfe, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/grammys\/artists\/lorne-balfe\/11550\">won a Grammy<\/a> for scoring <em>The Dark Knight <\/em>(2009), definitely seems to be channelling <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Small Axe:\nLover\u2019s Rock<\/em> (BBC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Small Axe: Official Playlist\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/35eNWNVrgv1xWTEw9vF0X9?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One to make you ache for a good house party. (Or any party at all, for that matter.) Part of Steve McQueen\u2019s <em>Small Axe<\/em> anthology, the highs and lows of a London house party in the British West Indian community are played out along with a gorgeous selection of \u201870s tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2020\/11\/lovers-rock-songs-steve-mcqueen-interview-silly-games.html\">Rocksteady, Motown, pop, R&amp;B&#8230; <\/a>We follow the characters through the sweaty living room, squeeze past cramped toilet queues and up and down the cigarette smoke-filled garden path on a kaleidoscope of a night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>The Third\nDay<\/em> (Sky\nAtlantic\/HBO)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Third Day | Official Trailer | Sky Atlantic\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tFhMOdUwqQY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The music of pagan-horror three-part series <em>The Third Day <\/em>mirrors the psychological state of the characters. Jude Law and Naomi Harris\u2019s characters are discovering how they fit into the island, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/tv-interviews\/the-third-day-soundtrack-composers-interview-2786132\">the music reflects that<\/a>, slowly ratcheting up the feeling of dread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lcZvNbt1ooA\">middle episode <\/a>of the miniseries, \u2018Autumn\u2019, was shot and screened live, an experimental piece of theatre that included Law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2020\/oct\/05\/jude-law-live-for-12-hours-the-third-day-autumn-pushed-boundaries-but-was-it-good\">digging a hole for an hour<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Noughts +\nCrosses <\/em>(BBC)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First love in a dangerous, alternate world - Noughts + Crosses: Trailer - BBC\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xTEJ4KJh4Ug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This adaptation of Malorie Blackman&#8217;s YA series is set in an alternate parallel history where the ruling race is of African descent. The soundtrack features artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/XyJur8RdsNQ\">Ebo Taylor <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xBujXJVBxNU\">Songhoy Blues<\/a> (who are featured performing in the series).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Composer Matthew Herbert was committed to finding the perfect sound, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2020\/apr\/01\/rude-latin-panic-and-sexual-tension-the-art-of-the-tv-soundtrack\">the soundtrack team<\/a> even recording themselves hitting the walls of buildings with links to Bristol\u2019s role in the slave trade to include <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/j5EZL5Bwcb8\">on the score<\/a>. African instruments are present but distorted, making them sound just a little different, which was the overall idea of the whole show  \u2013 things are familiar, but disconcerting and dystopian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>The Queen\u2019s\nGambit <\/em>(Netflix)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Main Title&quot; by Carlos Rafael Rivera - The Queen&#039;s Gambit\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gXtmCdWd1Cs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"\"Main Title\" by Carlos Rafael Rivera - The Queen's Gambit\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Who would have thought watching chess could be so captivating? The series follows orphaned Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) who has both a love for chess and an addiction to tranquillisers. Carlos Rafael Rivera\u2019s theme instantly calls to mind going into battle \u2013 armies rushing down a hillside, the upper hand switching from one General to the other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside a soundtrack of 1960s tracks sits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/discover-music\/periods-genres\/film-tv\/queens-gambit-netflix-soundtrack-composer-piano-music\/\">an orchestral score<\/a> that mirrors the cycle of Beth\u2019s quick mind with the turning of piano phrases and glossy repeated notes, whilst call-and-response lines follow the ticking-over of genius brains in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Star Trek: Picard <\/em>(Amazon Prime\/CBS) and <em>Star Trek: Discovery <\/em>(Netflix)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Trek Picard - Main title sequence\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VBF_7bMlqNk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What a year to be a Trekkie. 2020 saw the release of the first season of <em>Picard<\/em> and the third season of<em> Discovery<\/em>, both soundtracked by composer Jeff Russo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music and overall feel of <em>Picard <\/em>focuses on one figure, beloved protagonist Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). <em>Discovery <\/em>boldly launched a new ship with a whole new crew, whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/article\/2020\/star-trek-picard-music-composer-jeff-russo-interview\/\">the music of <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldderby.com\/article\/2020\/star-trek-picard-music-composer-jeff-russo-interview\/\">Picard<\/a> <\/em>mirrors one character\u2019s emotions not just the action. Both themes finding a balance between nostalgia and new, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickeringmyth.com\/2020\/04\/exclusive-interview-composer-jeff-russo-on-scoring-star-trek-picard-noah-hawleys-star-trek-movie-and-more\/\">calling back to musical elements from previous series<\/a> but also pulling the story forward \u2013 <em>Discovery<\/em> most obviously, ending the title sequence with the original Star Trek Theme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 - Main title sequence\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/edHfsHcSLMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of <em>Discovery <\/em>mixes a tone of wonder with adventurous choppy strings, pulling us towards action, whilst the beautiful strings and stately brass of <em>Picard <\/em>are more thoughtful but no less epic. The visuals show the shards of Picard coming together, returning to screens for the first time since Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knows when TV productions will be able to shoot as normal again \u2013 but I\u2019m sure the shows that premiere in 2021 will bring great soundtracks with them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> What was the best TV show soundtrack in 2020?
