It is however crucial to note however that there is no consistent payout rate across services and in fact streams can pay out very differently between two artists on the exact same services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>How streaming services work and where streaming royalties come from<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before diving deeper into payouts, let\u2019s take a quick step back and understand how these music streaming platforms actually function\u2014and what forms the basis of all those per-stream payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major music streaming services\u2014think <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/upload-your-music-to-spotify-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-apple-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple Music<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-music-on-amazon-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon Music<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/free-youtube-music-distribution-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube Music<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-pandora-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pandora<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-upload-music-to-tidal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tidal<\/a>\u2014operate under two primary business models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Monthly Subscriptions:<\/strong> Listeners pay a set fee for unlimited, ad-free access to music.<\/li><li><strong>Ad-Supported Free Access:<\/strong> Others use the service for free, but encounter ads sprinkled throughout their listening.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both streams of income\u2014subscriptions and advertising\u2014form the overall revenue pool for streaming services. Not all of this revenue goes to the artists, of course. First, the platform covers expenses and operational costs. But a significant percentage is then allocated to pay the rights holders: depending on the deal, this could be record labels, publishers, or independent musicians and songwriters themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason that there is no way to say for sure what a stream is worth on a platform is because the streaming rate is dependent on so many variables which can drastically change the value of a play. The most important elements that decide how much a stream will pay are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Whether the listener is a paying subscriber or on an ad-supported free tier<\/li><li>The territory they are listening from (country and location)<\/li><li>The number of streams on the service overall<\/li><li>How many streams other artists on the service are getting<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The listener&#8217;s subscription (or lack thereof) makes a huge difference, as a subscriber&#8217;s money is worth so much more than a free listener&#8217;s &#8211; no matter how many ads they&#8217;ve seen\/heard! Price points for subscriptions and therefore also streaming value change between every territory; so a stream in the US won&#8217;t be worth the same as a stream in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there is the pro-rata model which the majority of streaming services use to distribute their streaming revenues between the artists being listened to on their services. Using this model, all of the revenues that are allocated to be paid out to artists and labels go into one large pot. That pot is then divided out based on the percentage of streams that artists have gotten compared to everyone else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This system means that not only your own streams, but the streams of every other artist on the service can have an impact on how much you&#8217;re earning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>How revenue gets split between artists, labels, and distributors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how your music has been distributed to streaming services, your revenue may also be split by your label or distributor. Labels often take a high percentage cut from the streaming revenues. Distributors will often also take a percentage of the streaming revenue of artists they&#8217;re distributing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While major labels can sometimes negotiate higher rates per stream and offer powerful marketing and promotional resources that can boost your play counts, the trade-off is that the label typically takes a significant chunk of the revenue. In many cases, artists signed to major labels see only a fraction of streaming income, with the rest going to the label and other parties involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when considering how much you\u2019ll actually receive from streaming, keep in mind that your share depends not only on the platform\u2019s payout rate and the variables we\u2019ve covered, but also on the agreements you have in place with your label or distributor. This information comes from various up-to-date sources online. It is very important to bear in mind that whilst we estimate a rough average streaming rate for platforms that this does not suggest your streaming revenue will be represented on each platform by this average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Spotify<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/spotify#:~:text=You%20can%20distribute%20unlimited%20music,listeners%20all%20around%20the%20world.\">Spotify<\/a> pays out between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream on their platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, territory also plays a large part. Content ID will earn on average $0.00087 per stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>YouTube Music<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/free-youtube-music-distribution-2\/\">YouTube Music<\/a> is the music streaming service associated with and technically alongside and connected to YouTube&#8217;s platform. It has its own app and website and earns slightly different for music streams than plays on YouTube&#8217;s main site videos will garner as its a dedicated music streaming service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plays on YouTube Music will gain on average $0.008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>TIDAL<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-upload-music-to-tidal\/\">TIDAL<\/a> has long boasted some of the highest streaming rates in the industry with an artist focussed model and more expensive subscriptions for users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TIDAL pays on average $0.013 per stream. TIDAL is remarkable as one of the few streaming services to pay more than 1 cent per stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Amazon Music<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-music-on-amazon-music\/\">Amazon Music<\/a> is the official streaming service from the marketplace and tech giant. They offer a number of music offerings including the limited Prime music service which comes included in a Prime subscription. Here we&#8217;re talking about their full music service &#8211; Amazon Music Unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon Music pays an average of $0.004 a stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>Napster<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-napster\/\">Napster<\/a> are one of &#8211; if not <em>the<\/em> &#8211; highest paying music streaming service per play. Napster, like TIDAL, are a rarity in that they pay more than a cent per play. For many artists &#8211; especially those just starting out &#8211; making a sustainable income from streaming alone is notoriously difficult. While streaming services have unlocked a worldwide stage for musicians, the reality is that most payout rates are modest\u2014often demanding millions of plays before significant income rolls in.
