As AI music detection becomes more widespread, independent artists are finding their original tracks incorrectly flagged as AI-generated. Here\u2019s why it\u2019s happening and what musicians need to know.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AI-generated music is becoming increasingly common across streaming platforms, with detection tools playing a growing role in how services identify and manage synthetic content. But now, independent artists are facing a new concern as their original, human-made music is being incorrectly identified as AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, what happens when these tools get it wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI music detectors are flagging human-made tracks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A recent report from Digital Music News<\/a> highlights the problem through the experience of German musician Andr\u00e9 Grafert, who performs as Coloured Tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2026, Grafert released DECAY \/ TIME \u2013 A Tribute to Twice a Man<\/em>, a double album featuring 23 covers of the Swedish post-punk band. Grafert played, programmed, sang and produced the entire album himself, without generative AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, all 23 tracks were flagged as potentially AI-generated by SubmitHub\u2019s detection tool, according to testing conducted by Ines Weidemann of International Artist Marketing (IAM). Other detectors, including Let\u2019s Submit, TrackVerifier and ACRCloud, also reportedly identified the music as potentially AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem became even more striking when Weidemann tested original recordings by Twice a Man from the 1980s. SubmitHub flagged seven tracks as potentially AI-generated, with two incorrectly attributed to specific AI platforms, despite the music being created decades before AI existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music being flagged included the synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers and processed vocals that have defined electronic and post-punk music for decades. These results highlight an issue for musicians working in electronic, darkwave and post-punk styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are AI detectors getting it wrong?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

AI music detectors generally analyse audio characteristics and estimate the likelihood that a track was generated using artificial intelligence. That means the detection tools don\u2019t necessarily know how a song was actually created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent study highlighted weaknesses in AI music detection, finding that seemingly incidental audio characteristics, including sample rate and bitrate, could influence how tracks were classified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly relevant to electronic music, where synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers and processed vocals can create sounds that resemble AI-generated material. That makes it harder for detectors to distinguish between human-made and AI-generated tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, this doesn’t mean every AI detection tool is unreliable. Deezer<\/a>, for example, says that its own detection tool achieves 99.8% accuracy<\/a>, with fewer than one in 10,000 genuine human-made tracks incorrectly flagged.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
