Following Apple Music\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-music-brings-back-the-original-ipod-for-its-25th-anniversary\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-music-brings-back-the-original-ipod-for-its-25th-anniversary\/\">interactive iPod Easter egg<\/a> for the device\u2019s 25th anniversary, a new hardware project is looking to bring classic iPods into the modern era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London-based studio certain things has designed a replacement motherboard that adds modern features while retaining the original iPod\u2019s familiar design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two versions planned. Sprout Pico focuses on local music playback, while Sprout Pi adds Wi-Fi, streaming services and app support. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A modern motherboard for iPods\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xwB0ohq2xYk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sprout Pi adds Bluetooth, USB-C and streaming to iPods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike traditional iPod modifications that upgrade storage or battery life, the Sprout projects replace the entire logic board. The original screen and click wheel remain, but the hardware underneath gets a substantial upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new motherboard adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones and speakers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USB-C charging and digital audio output<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wi-Fi, AirPlay and Google Cast support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB of storage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FLAC playback and a hi-fi DAC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spotify and Apple Music streaming (on the higher version)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compatibility is currently limited to third- and fourth-generation iPods and the first- and second-generation iPod mini. The project also promises installation without soldering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some features are still under development though. The creators are preparing a crowdfunding campaign through Crowd Supply, with pricing and release dates yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giving the iPod another life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The iPod might be long discontinued, but projects like Sprout Pi show that interest in dedicated music players hasn\u2019t disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the appeal comes from listeners looking for a break from streaming algorithms and digital distractions.
