As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-cracks-down-on-family-plan-sharing-as-goldman-sachs-estimates-meaningful-share-of-users-are-friends-sharing-a-plan-to-reduce-costs\/\">Music Business Worldwide<\/a> reported, the move could make it harder for friends and relatives living separately to split the cost of a subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>How does Spotify\u2019s new Family plan verification work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Spotify\u2019s process requires the plan manager to display a QR code in the mobile app, which the member then scans using their own phone. Both people must be in the same place, and the code refreshes every few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members have seven days from receiving a notification to complete the check. According to Spotify\u2019s support documentation, anyone who misses the deadline or cannot verify their eligibility will lose access to the paid plan and move to Spotify Free. They can rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, but cannot join a different one for 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The QR check adds to Spotify\u2019s existing address verification rules, which already require members of its household plans to live at the same address. Spotify says it checks addresses for verification rather than tracking users\u2019 locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has since addressed the change publicly. Speaking during its third-quarter results call on the 22nd of October, co-CEO Alex Norstr\u00f6m described the move as a \u201croutine improvement\u201d to existing verification methods, rather than a one-off crackdown. He also said the work would continue as Spotify updates its checks over time, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/10\/22\/spotify-confirms-family-plan-crackdown-but-calls-it-a-routine-improvement\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">TechCrunch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why is Spotify tightening its rules now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The move comes as streaming services look for ways to generate more revenue from existing subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Music Business Worldwide reports, Goldman Sachs argued in its Music in the Air report, published on the 15th of October, that streaming platforms could increase revenue by enforcing household eligibility rules more consistently. The bank estimated that a \u201cmeaningful share\u201d of Family plan users are friends sharing subscriptions to cut costs, rather than people living together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economics help explain the appeal. In the US, Spotify\u2019s Family plan costs $21.99 a month for up to six accounts, compared with $12.99 for an Individual subscription. Even a small group sharing the Family plan can make a substantial saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goldman Sachs also pointed to Netflix\u2019s password-sharing restrictions as a precedent, suggesting music streaming services could similarly encourage people outside eligible households to take out individual subscriptions instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Could other streaming services follow?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Spotify has tried to verify household membership before. In 2018, it tested GPS-based checks for Family plan subscribers in several markets, but dropped the trial following public criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its latest approach could create friction for legitimate families, too, particularly when adult children move away from home.
