The Ed Sheeran and Macklemore controversy raises important questions about freedom of expression, artistic independence and the realities of working in the music industry.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For independent artists, having control over your music can mean much more than owning your masters or choosing your distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also mean deciding what you stand for, what you say onstage and how openly you express yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran and Macklemore’s tour has brought those questions into sharp focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour after making pro-Palestinian comments during his performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The tour’s promoter, Messina Touring Group, said venues hosting upcoming dates had indicated they would not allow concerts to go ahead with Macklemore on the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheeran has since said that the decision was made by the promoter and venues, rather than by him. He said he had attempted to find a solution and that he wanted his shows to remain places of unity rather than political platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation has subsequently led several other artists connected to the tour to withdraw in solidarity with Macklemore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever an artist’s personal view of the political issues involved, the situation raises a much broader question for musicians:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much freedom does an artist really have to express themselves when their career depends on other people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom of expression doesn’t mean freedom from consequences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For musicians, freedom of expression and professional independence aren’t necessarily the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An artist can have every legal right to express a political opinion while still facing consequences from audiences, promoters, venues, festivals, sponsors or other industry partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s an uncomfortable reality, but it’s an important one for independent artists to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macklemore’s case demonstrates how quickly a statement made during a performance can become part of a much larger business conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the tour promoter, venues objected to his continued participation and indicated that shows could not proceed with him on the lineup. The promoter therefore made the decision to remove him from the remaining dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn’t necessarily mean an artist should avoid controversial subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, it highlights the importance of understanding that creative freedom and commercial relationships can sometimes pull in different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An artist doesn’t have to be political<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most interesting parts of the controversy is that Sheeran has taken a very different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his response, Sheeran said he was appalled by the suffering caused by the Israel-Palestine conflict but explained that he chooses not to use his concerts as a political platform. He said he wants his shows to be a place where people from different backgrounds can come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s also a form of artistic choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There can be a tendency to assume that musicians with large audiences have a responsibility to speak publicly about major political events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But artists don’t all have to use their platforms in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some musicians will make political activism a central part of their work. Others will keep their political beliefs private. Some may only speak about particular issues that directly affect them or their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There isn’t one way to be an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The important thing is understanding what your<\/strong> boundaries are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But silence is a choice too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Choosing not to speak publicly doesn’t mean an artist has no opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheeran made that distinction himself, saying that his decision not to publicly discuss his personal political views shouldn’t be interpreted as meaning that he doesn’t care about the issues involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For independent artists, this distinction can be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to turn every performance into a political statement. Equally, you shouldn’t necessarily feel that you have to remain silent simply because you’re worried about upsetting somebody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is ultimately about what kind of relationship you want to have with your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you want your music to be primarily an escape? Do you want activism to be part of your identity as an artist? Are there particular causes you feel strongly enough about to discuss publicly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those decisions belong to the artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independent doesn’t mean completely independent<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s another lesson here that is particularly relevant to independent musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201cindependent\u201d<\/strong> can make it sound as though an artist has complete control over their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In reality, even the most independent musician relies on other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might distribute your music yourself, own your recordings and manage your social media accounts \u2014 but you could still depend on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
