Universal Music Group has sued DistroKid, alleging unlawful practices involving AI-generated music, copyright infringement and streaming platforms.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Universal Music Group (UMG) has filed a lawsuit against music distributor DistroKid, accusing the company of engaging in \u201cunlawful practices\u201d and allowing streaming platforms to be flooded with AI-generated music, copyright-infringing tracks and other allegedly unauthorized content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Delaware on September 15, puts one of the music industry’s biggest rights holders directly against one of the world’s largest independent music distribution services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the centre of UMG’s complaint is the growing problem of AI-generated music appearing at enormous volumes across streaming services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMG accuses DistroKid of enabling AI-generated \u2018slop\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UMG alleges that DistroKid has allowed its platforms to be used to distribute large quantities of AI-generated music without adequate safeguards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The label claims that some of this material is presented in ways that can make it appear to be music created by human artists, potentially diverting listeners and streaming revenue away from legitimate artists and rights holders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importantly, UMG says its lawsuit is not an attack on AI-generated music simply because it is AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reporting on the complaint, UMG specifically distinguishes between AI music that is clearly disclosed and music that allegedly \u201cmasquerades as something it is not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction could become an important part of the case as the music industry continues to work out how AI-generated music should coexist with human-created music on streaming platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extraordinary volume of releases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of UMG’s arguments focuses on the sheer volume of music being uploaded through DistroKid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint reportedly points to an account called \u201cLofi Chill\u201d, which UMG says released 4,562 tracks over a single year, a rate the label argues would be impossible for a human musician to achieve through conventional music-making processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMG alleges that this kind of mass uploading can contribute to an environment where legitimate artists have to compete for attention and streaming revenue against enormous quantities of low-effort or automated content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The label describes this material using the increasingly common term \u201cAI-generated slop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For artists trying to build an audience on streaming services, the concern is not simply that there is more music available. It is that huge quantities of automatically generated tracks could make discovery more difficult while potentially capturing streams and royalties that might otherwise go elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMG alleges more than AI-generated music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit goes beyond AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMG also accuses DistroKid of distributing allegedly unauthorized remixes and altered versions of existing recordings, including speed-altered tracks, as well as music containing unlicensed samples, instrumentals and other copyrighted material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The label claims DistroKid’s systems and policies have not done enough to prevent this material from reaching streaming platforms, and alleges that the company has continued distributing some content despite being aware of infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those allegations form part of UMG’s broader claims of copyright infringement and deceptive trade practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DistroKid disputes the allegations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DistroKid has pushed back against UMG’s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times<\/em>, DistroKid said it takes \u201ccopyright protection, fraud prevention and the integrity of the music ecosystem seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The allegations made in UMG’s complaint have not been established as facts by a court. The lawsuit is at an early stage, and DistroKid will have the opportunity to respond to the claims as the case progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case is currently listed as UMG Recordings, Inc. et al. v. DistroKid, LLC et al., filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this case matters for independent artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DistroKid has become an important part of the independent music ecosystem, allowing artists to distribute music to Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok and numerous other platforms for a subscription fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes the dispute particularly significant for independent musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital distributors sit between artists and streaming platforms. They make it possible for almost anyone to release music globally, but that accessibility also creates challenges around copyright infringement, fraud and the rapidly increasing volume of AI-generated content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The industry is already responding to these concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Streaming services have introduced different approaches to identifying or handling AI-generated music. Spotify and Apple Music have introduced AI-related labelling, while Tidal has taken a stronger approach by removing royalty eligibility from tracks it identifies as entirely AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the wider music industry is developing measures intended to combat streaming fraud and protect legitimate artists from having royalties diverted by artificial or manipulated streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UMG’s position on AI is more complicated than the lawsuit might suggest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UMG’s legal action against DistroKid comes at an interesting moment for the major label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the company is challenging the alleged misuse of AI-generated music, UMG is also actively pursuing licensed uses of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has entered partnerships involving AI companies including Udio, Nvidia, Stability AI and, most recently, ElevenLabs. UMG’s partnership with ElevenLabs is intended to explore AI-powered music creation and new ways for fans to remix and create music using licensed UMG material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the debate is increasingly moving away from simply asking whether AI music should exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, the key questions are becoming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who owns it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was the underlying music used with permission?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the AI involvement disclosed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who receives the royalties?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps most importantly for streaming services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can platforms distinguish legitimate AI-assisted music from fraudulent or infringing uploads?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new battle over the future of music distribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The DistroKid lawsuit arrives during a period of rapid change for the music industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI-generated music is becoming increasingly sophisticated, while the cost and time required to create and distribute music continue to fall. At the same time, streaming platforms are already dealing with problems surrounding fake streams, automated uploads and copyright infringement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For independent artists, the outcome of this case could therefore have implications beyond the two companies involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If distributors face greater responsibility for detecting infringing or deceptive uploads, artists could eventually see stricter verification systems and content checks before their music reaches streaming platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For distributors, however, increased responsibility could make it more difficult to maintain the open-access model that has allowed millions of independent artists to release music without traditional label backing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, those questions remain unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is clear is that the battle over AI-generated music is no longer limited to AI companies and record labels.
