Physical formats are experiencing a notable revival, while sync licensing is also seeing strong growth.

For independent artists and labels, the figures offer an interesting look at the different opportunities available across today’s music industry.

Streaming continues to dominate

Streaming remains the foundation of the US recorded music market, generating $4.9 billion in the first half of 2026. That represents a 4.7% increase compared with the first half of 2025 and means streaming accounted for around 82% of total recorded music revenue.

Paid subscriptions continue to be particularly important. Revenue from paid subscriptions reached $3.4 billion, up 6.4% year-on-year.

Premium subscription streaming, which includes services offering unlimited on-demand access to music, generated $3.11 billion, an increase of 7.8%. The number of premium subscription accounts also grew by 5.5% to 111.1 million.

The figures reinforce just how important streaming remains for artists looking to reach listeners. Despite the emergence of new formats and changing listening habits, subscription services continue to provide the biggest pool of recorded music revenue.

However, the growth rate also suggests that streaming is becoming a more mature part of the market. Revenue is still rising, but at a slower pace than some of the fastest-growing areas of the industry.

CDs are making a surprising comeback

One of the biggest stories in the RIAA’s latest report is the remarkable growth of CDs.

CD revenue increased by 58.6% during the first half of 2026, reaching $171.1 million. The number of CDs sold also rose significantly, increasing by 45.7% to 17.5 million units.

That is a striking turnaround for a format that spent years being pushed aside by downloads and streaming.

Vinyl continues to perform strongly too, with revenue increasing 17.7% year-on-year to $543.8 million. Overall, physical music revenue rose 25.9% to $731.5 million.

The renewed interest in physical music is part of a wider shift in how fans interact with their favourite artists. Streaming offers convenience and access, but physical releases offer something different: a product that fans can own, collect and display.

For artists with an engaged audience, that can create opportunities beyond simply generating streams.

What does the CD revival mean for independent artists?

The resurgence of CDs does not necessarily mean that every independent artist should rush to manufacture a physical release. Streaming remains overwhelmingly dominant, and getting music onto the major digital platforms is still essential for reaching the largest possible audience.

However, the numbers demonstrate that physical music should not necessarily be dismissed as an outdated business model.

For artists who have built a dedicated fanbase, CDs, vinyl and limited physical editions can become another way of turning listener engagement into revenue. A new album could live simultaneously as a streaming release, a physical product and a piece of merchandise, giving fans different ways to support the artist.

This is particularly relevant for independent artists, who can use smaller production runs and direct-to-fan sales to test whether there is demand for a physical release without necessarily committing to huge quantities.

The continued growth of vinyl, combined with the sudden acceleration of CD sales, suggests that fans are not necessarily choosing between physical and digital music. Instead, they appear increasingly comfortable using both.

Sync licensing is growing too

Another encouraging area of the report is sync licensing.

Revenue from music used in film, television, advertising, games and other visual media increased 18.2% to $231.8 million during the first half of 2026.

Sync can be particularly interesting for independent artists and producers because it provides another route for music to reach audiences outside traditional streaming platforms.

A song does not necessarily need millions of streams to have value in a visual production. The right track can find a home in a television programme, advert, film, game or online campaign, potentially introducing an artist to an entirely new audience in the process.

As more content is produced across streaming services, social platforms and digital media, opportunities for music to accompany visual content are continuing to expand.

Downloads continue their decline

While most of the major categories saw growth, permanent downloads continued to move in the opposite direction.

Revenue from downloads fell 12.7% to $121 million in the first half of 2026, continuing the long-term decline that began as streaming became the dominant way for people to consume music.

The decline is another indication of just how dramatically listening habits have changed. Rather than purchasing individual tracks or albums, listeners increasingly pay for access to vast catalogues through subscription services.

For today’s independent artists, this makes the quality of their digital release strategy more important than ever. Getting music onto streaming platforms is only the starting point, with discovery, promotion, playlisting, social media and fan engagement all playing a role in helping a release find its audience.

The music market is becoming more diverse

Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from the RIAA’s figures is that the growth of the music industry is no longer being driven by one format alone.

Streaming remains the clear leader, but physical music is growing at a much faster rate, while sync is also expanding significantly. At the same time, subscription numbers continue to rise.

The RIAA described the results as evidence of a “healthy, diversified marketplace”, highlighting the different ways audiences are now experiencing music.

For independent artists and labels, that diversification could be an opportunity.

A successful release does not have to exist solely as a Spotify stream or an Apple Music play. It can become a wider campaign built around streaming, social content, physical products, live performances, merchandise and potential sync opportunities.

The challenge is understanding where your audience is and finding the right ways to give them more opportunities to connect with your music.

What this means for independent artists

The latest US figures paint a positive picture for the wider recorded music industry. Revenues are growing, streaming continues to bring in billions, and formats that were once considered to be disappearing are finding new audiences.

For independent artists, the biggest lesson may be that there is no single way to build value around your music.

Streaming should remain an important part of any release strategy, but the renewed popularity of physical music demonstrates that fans are still willing to spend money on something tangible when they feel connected to an artist or release.

At the same time, the growth in sync highlights another potential revenue stream for artists who are creating music that can work across film, television, advertising, gaming and digital content.

The US recorded music market may be increasingly digital, but the first half of 2026 shows that fans have not completely left physical music behind. If anything, the market is becoming more varied, giving artists and labels more ways to connect with listeners and build sustainable careers around their music.

Distribute your music for FREE with RouteNote!

US recorded music revenues grew 6.9% in the first half of 2026, with streaming leading the market and CDs, vinyl and sync licensing seeing strong growth.
