For independent artists, labels and distributors, the move could signal a new era of transparency around how AI is used in music.

AI-generated music is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Streaming platforms are receiving enormous volumes of AI-created tracks, while artists, labels and rights holders are trying to understand how this rapidly expanding catalogue is affecting discovery, royalties, charts and the wider music ecosystem.

Now, one of the music industry’s most important data companies is taking a major step towards making that activity easier to track.

Luminate has launched a new framework for identifying and measuring AI-generated music, with its CONNECT platform now capable of flagging AI-generated songs and artists worldwide. The new labels are expected to become visible to CONNECT customers and partners later in 2026.

For independent musicians and labels, this is another important development in an industry where transparency around AI is quickly becoming part of the normal release process.

What is Luminate’s new AI music framework?

Luminate is best known for its music consumption data, with its information helping power Billboard’s charts and providing industry professionals with insight into streaming, sales and audience behaviour.

Its CONNECT platform brings together data on artists, songs and releases, allowing music companies to analyse performance, consumption and market trends.

The new AI framework adds another layer to that system.

Luminate says CONNECT can now identify AI-generated songs and artists, with the company having already identified thousands of AI-generated items in its database. The classifications aren’t visible to users yet, but Luminate says the labels will roll out to customers and partners later this year.

Songs and recordings identified as fully AI-created will receive an “AI Generated” label.

There will also be separate classifications for artists. An “AI” label will indicate an artist confirmed to be fully AI-generated, while “Human” will only be applied to artists individually confirmed by Luminate’s screening process.

Importantly, Luminate says that a lack of an AI or Human label doesn’t necessarily mean something has been confirmed as human-made. The company hasn’t yet processed its entire database through the identification system.

How will Luminate identify AI-generated music?

Rather than relying on one detection method, Luminate is building its framework around three different sources of information.

The first is Luminate’s own identification technology. Its data science team analyses artists and songs in CONNECT, looking at streaming data and metadata before using audio identification technology to help confirm potential AI-generated material.

The second element is data supplied by streaming platforms.

As DSPs develop their own systems for identifying AI-generated music, Luminate says it will be able to incorporate that information through its existing partnerships.

The third is attribution information from AI music companies themselves.

Luminate says it is in discussions with AI music companies about receiving information directly from the source, potentially allowing AI-generated content to be identified before it reaches a streaming service.

That combination could eventually give the industry a much clearer picture of how AI-generated music moves from creation to distribution to consumption.

Why does this matter now?

The timing is significant.

AI-generated music has grown at a remarkable pace, creating a challenge for platforms and rights holders trying to distinguish between human-made, AI-assisted and fully AI-generated music.

Luminate CEO Rob Jonas said the growth of AI music has moved faster than the industry’s ability to consistently identify and measure it, arguing that greater visibility is needed to understand trends, assess fraud risks and make informed decisions.

The scale of the issue has become increasingly obvious.

In July, Deezer said it was receiving close to 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks per day in June, accounting for more than half of new tracks delivered to the service on peak days.

That’s a huge amount of music entering the ecosystem.

And while AI music itself isn’t necessarily a problem, the sheer volume creates questions about discovery, streaming manipulation and how royalties are distributed.

For independent artists, that’s where the issue becomes particularly relevant.

AI music isn’t automatically the problem

It’s important to separate AI-assisted music creation from music that is generated almost entirely by AI.

Many human artists already use AI tools in some part of their creative process. They might use AI for brainstorming, sound design, mastering, editing, production assistance or other elements of their workflow.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the finished recording is an entirely AI-generated work.

Luminate’s current framework is specifically focused on identifying recordings that are fully AI-created, while its artist classifications are intended to identify artists that are fully AI-generated.

That’s an important distinction for musicians.

The conversation around AI is moving beyond the simple question of whether an artist has used AI at all. Increasingly, the industry will need to understand how AI was used, how much of a recording was generated by it and where human creativity remains central.

That could become increasingly important for artists as platforms develop their own AI policies.

Spotify, Apple Music and other platforms are also moving towards AI labels

Luminate’s announcement is part of a much wider industry trend.

Streaming platforms have started developing their own approaches to AI transparency, with Deezer already identifying and tagging AI-generated music.

Apple Music announced in August that it will label songs that are materially generated using AI, while Spotify has announced an “AI Persona” badge for artist profiles built around AI-generated identities. Spotify also says music from those AI Personas will be kept out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.

That means AI disclosure is increasingly moving from being something discussed by industry organisations into something listeners may actually see.

For artists, that’s worth paying attention to.

The metadata attached to your music is becoming more important, and transparency around how a track was created could increasingly influence how it is treated by platforms and industry databases.

Could AI labels affect the charts?

This is where Luminate’s announcement becomes particularly interesting.

Luminate provides the data behind Billboard’s charts, meaning the company’s ability to identify AI-generated music could eventually have implications for how AI tracks are measured within the wider music industry.

However, Luminate has not said that its AI labels automatically determine chart eligibility.

That’s an important distinction.

Billboard has separately committed to identifying AI use on its charts and in its editorial coverage, while industry bodies are developing their own policies around whether fully AI-generated music should be eligible for certain charts.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and a group of major and independent music companies recently proposed principles that would keep fully AI-generated recordings off official charts unless certain conditions around authorisation, human contribution and fraud are met.

Australia’s ARIA Charts has also moved to exclude wholly AI-generated tracks from its charts and awards under its updated rules.

So while Luminate’s system isn’t itself a chart-eligibility policy, it could provide an important piece of the infrastructure needed to enforce future rules.

What does this mean for independent artists?

For independent musicians, the most important takeaway isn’t necessarily that AI-generated music is about to be banned or pushed out of streaming.

It’s that transparency is becoming increasingly important.

If you’re using AI tools as part of your creative process, make sure you understand the terms attached to those tools. Check what commercial rights you receive, whether the service allows distribution and whether you need to disclose AI involvement.

It’s also worth keeping records of your creative process.

That might include project files, stems, songwriting notes, original recordings and information about which tools were used during production.

You may never need to provide that information.

But if a track is incorrectly flagged as AI-generated, having evidence of your creative process could become useful.

Luminate says flagged content will have a dedicated review process, allowing artists and labels to respond if they believe an AI classification is incorrect.

That’s particularly important as automated identification systems become more widespread.

AI detection won’t be perfect

No identification system is likely to get everything right.

Luminate itself acknowledges that its database hasn’t been fully processed and that some AI-generated content may not yet receive a label. The company says it is continuing to expand its coverage.

For artists, that means an AI label shouldn’t necessarily be treated as an absolute statement about how a track was created.

There will inevitably be false positives, missed detections and grey areas.

That’s why Luminate’s review process is potentially important.

As these systems become more influential, artists need a way to challenge incorrect classifications rather than simply accepting an automated decision.

The bigger issue, music discovery is getting noisier

Perhaps the biggest reason this matters for independent artists is the effect AI could have on music discovery.

Streaming platforms already contain enormous catalogues. Every day, thousands of new tracks compete for attention.

Now add tens of thousands of AI-generated tracks to that ecosystem.

The challenge isn’t simply that AI music exists. It’s that a huge increase in supply can make it harder for listeners to find the music created by artists they genuinely want to follow.

That’s why we’re likely to see more sophisticated filtering, recommendation systems and transparency tools.

For independent artists, this makes artist identity more valuable.

A listener who discovers you isn’t just choosing one song. They’re potentially choosing an artist to follow, a catalogue to explore and a story to become invested in.

That human connection is something a label on a database can’t create for you.

What artists should do now

There’s no need to panic about Luminate’s announcement.

Instead, use it as a reminder to get your digital music strategy in order.

If you’re releasing music independently, make sure your metadata is accurate and that your artist name, credits, ISRCs and release information are consistent across platforms.

If you use AI during production, understand exactly what your chosen tools allow you to do commercially. Don’t assume that being able to generate or download a track automatically means you have unrestricted rights to distribute it.

And if you’re creating predominantly human-made music, keep evidence of your creative process where practical.

Most importantly, keep building your artist identity.

Your music, social presence, live performances, collaborations and relationship with your audience all help distinguish your project from the enormous volume of content now entering streaming services.

Distribution is only part of that process, but it’s an important one. RouteNote gives independent artists and labels a way to distribute their music across major streaming and social platforms while maintaining control over their releases.

As AI changes the volume and visibility of music online, having a clear release strategy, and making sure your catalogue is properly managed, will only become more important.

A new standard for AI music transparency?

Luminate describes its new framework as a starting point, rather than a finished solution.

That’s probably the most sensible way to look at it.

The music industry is still figuring out how AI should be identified, labelled, measured and regulated. Streaming platforms are developing their own systems, AI companies are negotiating licensing arrangements and chart organisations are introducing new eligibility requirements.

There isn’t one universal standard yet.

But Luminate’s involvement is significant because CONNECT sits so close to the data infrastructure used by the wider music industry.

If Luminate can combine its own identification technology with data from DSPs and AI music companies, it could eventually give labels, publishers, managers and artists a much clearer understanding of where AI-generated music is appearing and how it is performing.

For independent artists, the message is simple: AI isn’t just changing how music can be made. It’s changing how music is identified, measured and understood.

And as that system develops, staying informed about the rules could become just as important as staying creative.

Distribute your music for FREE with RouteNote!

Luminate is introducing a new framework designed to identify and measure AI-generated music, with ‘AI Generated’ labels coming to its CONNECT platform later this year.
