What the physical music revival means for artists

CDs are making an unexpected comeback, with younger listeners embracing physical music as a way to collect, connect with and support their favourite artists.

Streaming might dominate how we listen to music nowadays, but physical formats still continue to remain relevant in the current music landscape.

CD sales are growing again, and the latest figures from Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report suggest the format is finding a new audience among younger music fans. Rather than replacing streaming, CDs are becoming another way for listeners to engage with the music they love.

CD sales are on the rise

According to Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report, CD sales in the US increased 16% in the first half of 2026, reaching 16.3 million units. Vinyl sales grew by 2.4% over the same period. That means CD sales growth is currently outpacing vinyl growth by nearly seven times.

K-pop has been a major factor in this thanks to them being sold through many variants and editions which encourage fans to buy each exclusive copy. In particular, BTS’ comeback album, ARIRANG, helped drive physical sales.

However, CD purchases were still up 6.7% when K-pop sales were excluded, suggesting the wider format is seeing renewed interest. Luminate also attributes some of the growth of CDs to collection building and price accessibility, highlighting that CDs can offer fans a more affordable way to own physical music compared to vinyl.

Why are younger fans buying CDs?

Interestingly, listening isn’t always the main reason. Around half of Gen Z and millennial CD buyers don’t own a CD player, according to Luminate.

Instead, CDs can function more like merchandise or collectables. Fans get something tangible from an artist they love, while buying directly into their career.

The Guardian’s recent reporting on the trend also points to affordability and a desire to move away from phone-based listening. CDs can offer a physical music experience without the higher cost of getting into vinyl. Meanwhile, there’s also the appeal of owning something physical in an era where most music exists behind a streaming app.

What does this mean for independent artists?

The CD revival doesn’t mean artists should abandon digital music distribution. If anything, it highlights how digital and physical releases can complement each other.

Streaming gives artists global reach, while physical releases can give their most engaged fans something more personal to buy and keep.

For independent artists, that could mean creating special editions with bonus tracks or alternative artwork, bundling physical copies alongside other merchandise, or releasing limited edition physical releases for new albums or EPs.

Essentially, any form of physical release that could give your latest music a sense of exclusivity that will make you fans want to purchase it.

The era of album variants: How artists can maximize every album release

K-pop’s success demonstrates how collectability can encourage fans to buy physical releases, with multiple editions and exclusive extras becoming a major part of the experience.

You don’t necessarily need to replicate that model. The key takeaway is simply to give fans a reason to own your music.

Streaming isn’t going anywhere

It’s also important not to mistake the growth of CDs for a decline in streaming. The two formats are growing alongside each other.

Luminate reports that US on-demand audio streams increased during the first half of 2026, while global on-demand streams rose 9.8% to 2.8 trillion.

For artists, this reinforces the value of having a release strategy that works across both worlds. Digital distribution helps you reach listeners. Physical music gives your biggest fans another way to support you.

So, is the CD really making a comeback?

Maybe, but it’s probably more accurate to call this a new role for CDs rather than a return to their 1990s heyday.

Streaming remains the easiest way to discover and listen to music, but physical releases offer something streaming can’t: something fans can own.

For independent artists and labels, that makes CDs worth considering as part of a wider release and merch strategy. You can use digital distribution to put your music in front of listeners around the world, while giving your most dedicated fans something tangible to take home.

The CD might no longer be the default way to listen to music. But it could be becoming a new way to show that you love it.

Whether you’re releasing a digital single, album or physical project, getting your music onto streaming platforms is an essential part of reaching new listeners.
