YouTube is changing how it counts public views from August 24, with views set to register as soon as a video starts playing. Here\u2019s what the update means for independent artists.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

YouTube is changing the way it counts views across its platform. From August 24, 2026, a public view will be counted as soon as a video begins playing, from the very first frame. The change will apply across YouTube<\/a>, bringing long-form videos in line with the approach YouTube introduced for Shorts<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For artists, that could mean your public view counts start increasing faster. However, it doesn’t change how YouTube measures views for monetisation or necessarily means more people are watching your videos for longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s changing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

YouTube says it has historically used different systems for counting views across different video formats. Previously, it was believed that viewers needed to watch for a longer 30-second period before a view was counted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, a view will count as soon as playback begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YouTube introduced the same approach for Shorts last year, while TikTok and Instagram also count views from the start of playback. The platform hopes that the change will give creators a clearer picture of their overall exposure and make it easier to demonstrate their reach to potential partners and sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previous metric isn\u2019t disappearing either. YouTube is renaming it \u201cEngaged views\u201d and keeping it available in Analytics, giving creators a way to see how many viewers continued watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does this mean for artists and creators?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The most obvious change is that your public view count may grow faster. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean more people are watching your music videos or other content for longer. It simply means more plays will now qualify as a public view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s worth keeping in mind when comparing performance between uploads or platforms. A bigger public number will tell you more about initial exposure, while engaged views and other data can give you a better idea of whether your content actually held someone’s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For artists and creators, this could make public view counts more useful when demonstrating reach, particularly when promoting your work to potential collaborators, partners or sponsors. But don’t rely on the headline number alone when deciding what’s working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This won’t change YouTube’s recent YPP changes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The timing of this update is particularly interesting because YouTube has also recently announced<\/a> significant changes to its YouTube Partner Program (YPP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From February 1, 2027, new creators will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 12 months or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, alongside the existing 1,000-subscriber requirement, to access ad and subscription revenue. That’s double the current 4,000-hour and 10-million-Shorts thresholds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
