Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group are taking legal action against Musi in Canada, putting the spotlight on how music can be accessed, licensed and monetised online.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Universal and Sony take aim at Musi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group have filed a copyright lawsuit against Musi, a music streaming app that pulls music from YouTube rather than licensing recordings directly from music rightsholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to CMU<\/a>, the lawsuit has been coordinated by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and its Canadian affiliate, Music Canada. The record companies allege that Musi makes copyrighted recordings available without permission and circumvents technical protections used by YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musi has previously disputed similar claims, arguing that it provides access to publicly available YouTube content and that YouTube already licenses the music on its platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canadian case will now put that business model under the microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Musi controversial?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Musi isn’t a traditional streaming service. Instead of negotiating its own music licences, the app has historically accessed music hosted on YouTube and built its own listening experience around that content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has also been accused of replacing YouTube’s advertising with its own. This has been a particular point of concern for music rightsholders, with publishers arguing that the model could redirect advertising revenue associated with licensed music away from songwriters and publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern streaming ecosystem is largely built around licensing agreements. Services pay rightsholders for the music they make available, while artists, songwriters, labels and publishers receive royalties through the relevant rights and licensing structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major labels argue that Musi is effectively building a commercial music service around someone else’s licensed catalogue without entering those agreements itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley described services using this model as \u201cparasitic apps\u201d and said the organisation is targeting businesses that exploit artists and their music rather than operating through licensing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musi has already faced Apple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This isn’t Musi’s first major legal battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple removed Musi from the App Store in September 2024 following complaints from YouTube and music rights holders. Musi subsequently sued Apple, arguing that its removal was improper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A US federal court initially refused Musi’s request to force Apple to reinstate the app. The court noted that Apple had received multiple complaints concerning Musi’s alleged intellectual property issues, although it did not rule on the underlying copyright allegations against Musi at that stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That case has since gone further. In March 2026, the court dismissed Musi’s lawsuit against Apple with prejudice, finding that Apple’s developer agreement gave it the right to stop offering an app with notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musi therefore remains unavailable through Apple’s App Store, although existing users have historically been able to continue using the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigger picture for music streaming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Musi case arrives at a time when the industry is becoming increasingly focused on how platforms interact with copyrighted music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada has already seen action against other services accused of taking advantage of licensed music infrastructure. In June 2026, the Federal Court of Canada issued the country’s first site-blocking order obtained on behalf of the music industry against stream-ripping services.  Those sites allowed users to extract audio from licensed streaming platforms, cutting rightsholders out of the revenue generated by legitimate streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s part of a wider push from the music industry to make sure new technology and services don’t simply find ways around the licensing systems that support the recorded music business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For artists, that’s worth keeping in mind as the way people discover and listen to music continues to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New platforms can create exciting opportunities for reaching listeners, but getting your music onto them isn’t just about visibility. The way your music is licensed, distributed and monetised matters too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Musi lawsuit is still only an allegation at this stage, and a Canadian court has not yet decided whether the company’s activities infringe copyright. But whatever the eventual outcome, the case is another sign that the music industry is prepared to challenge services it believes are building businesses around music without properly licensing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For independent artists, the takeaway is simple: keep creating, keep exploring new platforms, but make sure your music is being distributed and monetised through legitimate channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
