Charli XCX has officially entered the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, with a striking photograph of the pop star by acclaimed photographer Harley Weir now on display in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taken in December 2023, the portrait captures Charli during the period leading up to her hugely influential Brat<\/em> era. The image has since become closely associated with the visual identity surrounding the 2024 album, which went on to become a major cultural phenomenon and cement Charli’s position as one of contemporary pop’s most distinctive creative voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photograph is currently displayed in the Gallery’s History Makers Now space, a section dedicated to contemporary figures who have made a significant contribution across a wide range of fields. The National Portrait Gallery describes the display as bringing together some of the most recognisable figures of their generation alongside other influential individuals and trailblazers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition marks another significant moment in Charli XCX’s rapidly expanding cultural legacy. While her career has been rooted in music, her influence has increasingly extended into fashion, film and wider popular culture, making her a fitting addition to a national collection dedicated to documenting influential figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Portrait Gallery’s Senior Curator of Photographs, Brandei Estes, described Charli as “one of the defining cultural figures of her generation”, while praising Weir’s distinctive photographic style and ability to combine intimacy with a strong sense of presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Charli, the inclusion is particularly notable given the cultural impact of Brat<\/em>. Released in 2024, the album moved beyond the traditional boundaries of a pop release, inspiring a distinctive visual aesthetic and becoming a defining reference point in contemporary culture. The portrait itself forms part of that wider visual story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Portrait Gallery’s collection spans more than 220,000 works, including over 11,000 portrait paintings, drawings, miniatures and sculptures, as well as a photography collection containing more than 250,000 photographs and negatives. Its contemporary displays provide an opportunity to document the people shaping British culture in the present day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charli XCX’s arrival in the collection therefore places one of the UK’s most influential modern pop artists alongside a wider group of figures who have helped shape the country’s cultural landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
