After 18 years of championing new talent, the BBC Introducing Stage is leaving Reading & Leeds Festival. Here’s what it means for the future of emerging artists.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The BBC Introducing Stage is set to disappear from Reading & Leeds Festival after 18 years, bringing an end to one of the UK’s most influential platforms for emerging artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since launching in 2008, the stage has helped launch the careers of some of Britain’s biggest names, including Ed Sheeran, Charli XCX, The 1975, Florence + The Machine, RAYE and Dave. Organisers estimate that around 70% of UK artists on this year’s Reading & Leeds line-up have previously performed on the BBC Introducing Stage, underlining its importance in discovering and nurturing new talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision comes as part of what Festival Republic has described as the biggest staging and arena overhaul in the festival’s history. Reading and Leeds will introduce several new and reimagined stages for 2026, including The Grid, The Gallery, The Warehouse and The Canopy, with the latter becoming the new home for emerging artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, while the stage itself is disappearing, organisers insist their commitment to new music remains unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Festival Republic explained that the change would allow them to support “a much wider pool of emerging talent”. Previously, only artists selected through BBC Introducing were eligible to perform on the stage. The new format will allow the festival to book any emerging act, regardless of whether they have been featured by the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BBC Introducing Stage has long been regarded as a launchpad for future headliners. Over the past 18 years, countless artists have played intimate sets there before going on to headline festivals, top the charts and sell out arenas. For many festivalgoers, it became one of the best places to discover the next generation of British talent before they broke into the mainstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everyone has welcomed the decision. Tommy Longhurst, frontman of Reading band Only The Poets, described the move as “such a shame”, reflecting on the band’s own appearance on the stage and the role it played in inspiring local musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We hold those memories so highly and it was such a poignant moment for us to get to play a festival that inspired us to start the band,” he said in an interview with BBC Radio Berkshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news has also sparked debate among music fans, many of whom see the stage as an important stepping stone for unsigned artists. Others have argued that the festival’s wider overhaul could create more opportunities by removing the BBC-only requirement and opening the platform to a broader range of acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether the change proves to be a positive one remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the BBC Introducing Stage leaves behind an impressive legacy. Over nearly two decades, it introduced festival audiences to artists who would go on to become some of the biggest names in British music, making its disappearance the end of an important chapter in Reading & Leeds Festival history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
