During an interview on The Twenty Minute VC podcast, Shulman made a remark that quickly spread across the industry, by claiming that \u201cthe majority of people don\u2019t enjoy the majority of the time they spend making music\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Shulman was referring to the difficulty and time required to learn instruments, software, and make music. From his perspective, defending Suno as it lets people generate songs without putting in years of work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, nearly 13 months later, Shulman appears to be walking back on those comments. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/suno-ai-music-startup-cover-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Billboard<\/a> interview, he acknowledged that his wording missed the mark. Suno even previously <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/suno-admits-it-used-copyrighted-music-blames-majors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted<\/a> to doing so. Still, Shulman continues to maintain the position that training AI models on copyrighted work falls under \u201cfair use\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That stance is particularly significant given the legal battles currently unfolding in the industry, and Suno\u2019s licensing deal. At first, major labels began <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/the-music-industry-vs-ai-music-generators-udio-suno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filing lawsuits<\/a> against AI music platforms, including Suno, for copyright infringement. Since then, the landscape has started to shift. Suno recently reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/warner-music-suno-ai-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">licensing agreement<\/a> with Warner Music Group, resolving WMG\u2019s side of the lawsuit in the process. Instead of remaining locked in legal battles, licensing agreements could provide a framework for compensation and control between tech companies and rights holders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The signs are promising too, with Suno receiving a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/suno-funding-round-ai-music-shift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2 billion valuation<\/a> at the back-end of last year. There couldn\u2019t really be a greater sign of the confidence and interest in AI-generated music platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, Shulman\u2019s clarifications are just one small piece of the AI music story.
