Alongside the huge numbers of fraudulent streams detected in 2025, the platform is also putting new penalties in place for those who get caught trying to game the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Two billion fraudulent streams<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the conversation, Schusser revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-apple-music\/\">Apple Music<\/a> \u201cidentified and demonetized as many as 2 billion fraudulent streams\u201d on the platform last year. While that seems like a lot, fraudulent activity on Apple Music represents less than 0.5% of total listening, and was revealed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-music-reveals-less-than-1-of-its-streams-are-fraudulent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closer to 0.3% last year<\/a>. So, in the wider context, fraudulent streaming is still a relatively small slice of listening on Apple Music.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/musically.com\/2026\/02\/03\/apple-says-it-demonetised-2bn-fraudulent-music-streams-in-2025\/\">MusicAlly\u2019s logic<\/a>, if 2 billion fraudulent streams represents roughly 0.5% of Apple Music\u2019s total streams, it could mean that Apple Music racks up about 400 billion streams annually. The platform adopts systems that \u201ccheck and validate everyday single play\u201d. When streams are flagged as fraudulent, Apple Music removes those streams and removes those tracks from charts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, the royalties earned from those plays don\u2019t stay with whoever tried to game the system. Instead, they go back into the overall revenue pool, meaning that cash tied to fake listening gets redistributed to genuine artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Penalties for streaming fraud are getting tougher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple Music redistributes those royalties thanks to financial penalties on fraudulent streaming, which have been in place since 2022. The platform uses a sliding scale of fines on the royalties associated with fraudulent streams. Previously, penalties ranged from 5% to 25% which are now being doubled to 10% to 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In real terms, that means if someone manipulated streams to generate $1 million, they could now face penalties of up to $500,000. By doing so, Apple Music has taken millions of royalties from those cheating the system and given them back to the revenue pool for real artists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What about AI?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI-generated music often comes up in discussions around streaming fraud, with <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-music-on-deezer\/\">Deezer<\/a> revealing that <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/deezer-ai-music-streaming-fraud-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70% of AI-generated music streams on its platform were fraudulent<\/a> last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when questioned about AI, Schusser insisted that Apple Music won\u2019t be following in <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/bandcamp-policy-puts-human-artist-first-bans-ai-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bandcamp\u2019s footsteps of banning AI music outright<\/a>. In fact, Apple Music will continue using AI to enhance its own streaming services, like they\u2019ve already done with features such as <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/apple-music-automix-airplay-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AutoMix<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he pointed to the that the bigger industry issue is defining what AI actually is:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>\u201cIs it the songwriting? Is it the making of music? Is it just the vocals? But, the direction of travel is clear. At some point sooner or later, the industry will need to outline clear and consistent policies around what is or isn\u2019t allowed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all of that, Apple Music\u2019s stance is clear.
