The milestone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mosseri\/post\/DNQuTFlCV9P?xmt=AQF0nwH7qEo6o0zfyZegfAxeuRU4fdNTdeLsi9b2MGLbVw\">announced<\/a> by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, highlights how far the platform has come since debuting as Meta&#8217;s answer to X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs of a few weeks ago [there are] more than 400 million people active on Threads every month,\u201d Mosseri shared in his post. \u201cIt\u2019s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I\u2019m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There\u2019s so much work to do from our side, more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/12\/threads-now-has-more-than-400-million-monthly-active-users\/\">TechCrunch<\/a>, the figure represents a jump of 50 million users since April, when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the platform had reached 350 million MAUs. The growth follows a rapid start to the year, which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/threads-hits-320-million-users-adding-1-million-every-day\/\">Threads hit 320 million users<\/a> in January &#8211; adding around a million people a day at that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although X still claims a larger audience, with former CEO Linda Yaccarino stating in April that it has \u201cnearly 600 million\u201d MAUs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/threads-closes-in-on-x-for-daily-app-users\/\">gap is tightening<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2025\/08\/12\/threads-crosses-400m-monthly-active-users-as-it-gains-on-x\/\">9to5Mac<\/a> notes that at this pace, Threads could add over 100 million monthly active users in 2025 alone, putting it well past the halfway point towards catching up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of Threads\u2019 momentum comes from the steady addition of new features. Recent updates include <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/meta-testing-threads-dm-inbox\/\">direct messaging<\/a>, spoiler tags, a fediverse feed, custom feeds, AI-powered enhancements, and a highlighting tool. These smaller improvements, taken together, make the platform more versatile and appealing to users &#8211; including those thinking about moving away from X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A leadership change is also on the horizon. IT&#8217;s been confirmed that Connor Hayes will <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/07\/17\/meta-appoints-generative-ai-vp-to-run-threads\/\">take over<\/a> Adam Mosseri\u2019s day-to-day management of Threads from next month, while still reporting to him.
