This time, his lawyers are now pushing to gain access to UMG CEO Lucian Grainge\u2019s emails and texts. They also want to get a copy of Kendrick Lamar\u2019s recording contract, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2025\/08\/12\/drake-lawyers-lucian-grainge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DMN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>A brief recap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve already covered this story <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/drakes-defamation-battle-with-umg-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extensively<\/a>, and for the sake of repeating ourselves, here\u2019s what\u2019s relevant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just this week, Drake\u2019s team <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/drakes-umg-lawsuit-moves-forward-with-subpoena-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won approval to serve<\/a> Kojo Menne Asamoah, a figure they believe holds insider knowledge of UMG\u2019s promotional strategy for Lamar\u2019s track \u201cNot Like Us\u201d. That track is at the heart of Drake\u2019s defamation case against UMG, for their role in releasing and promoting a track that alleges he is a \u201ccertified pedophile\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the course of the lawsuit, the track has racked up <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/grammy-awards-2025-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several Grammy wins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/not-like-us-1-billion-spotify-streams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hit 1 billion streams on Spotify<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/kendrick-lamars-not-like-us-streams-increase-430-after-super-bowl-halftime-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soared in streams<\/a> following Kendrick Lamar\u2019s performance of it at <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/kendrick-lamar-performs-not-like-us-at-the-super-bowl-halftime-show-amidst-drake-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this year\u2019s Super Bowl<\/a>. Drake&#8217;s lawyers aren\u2019t buying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They argue Grainge was in a prime position to influence the track\u2019s rollout as CEO of UMG, the parent company to both Drake\u2019s and Kendrick\u2019s labels. According to Drake\u2019s camp, Grainge had a reason to boost the track\u2019s exposure in order to damage and devalue Drake\u2019s brand ahead of upcoming contract negotiation. And at the top of the tree, Grainge holds the role and knowledge needed in \u201cthe scheme to defame and harass\u201d Drake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Grainge could still benefit from the track\u2019s success through his connection to Kendrick\u2019s label. The success of the track is something that Drake\u2019s team claim has already cost him work, and other opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>The discovery push<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, UMG has been protecting Grainge from document discovery, but Drake\u2019s lawyers call this \u201cunfair, unwarranted, and inconsistent with the fundamental principles of discovery.\u201d They say that if Grainge truly had no involvement, then providing the requested documents \u201cwould impose minimal burden on UMG\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond Grainge\u2019s emails and texts, Drake\u2019s legal team is also after:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Interscope\u2019s financial profit records (Kendrick Lamar\u2019s label)<\/li><li>The valuation of Kendrick Lamar\u2019s catalog<\/li><li>Compensation details for Interscope CEO John Janick<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Presumably, gaining these details would give Drake\u2019s team a clearer picture of whether UMG pushed the track at his expense for financial benefit. This means both through the profits earned by UMG\u2019s subdivision label (Interscope) from the song\u2019s success, and any potential rewards given to Interscope\u2019s CEO for making it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What\u2019s next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the outcome of the case remains a far way off, one thing is for sure: with both sides digging in, the legal battle shows no signs of slowing.
