Users now need at least 1,000 followers and a public account to go live on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, anyone could go live, no matter their follower count or privacy settings. This has all changed. If you don\u2019t meet the new criteria, you\u2019ll see a message that says: \u201cOnly public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/helios-i.mashable.com\/imagery\/articles\/03E38PF5FxOpXGBbyLXfesp\/images-1.fill.size_2000x1920.v1754162753.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"422\"\/><figcaption><em>Image credits: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@social.varsity\/post\/DMq7DvXA3LN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Varsity<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019re a smaller creator or keep your profile private, you\u2019re now unable to go live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why did Instagram make the changes?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Instagram didn\u2019t give creators any advance notice, and they haven\u2019t fully explained the move. That said, a Meta spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/01\/instagram-now-requires-users-to-have-at-least-1000-followers-to-go-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TechCrunch<\/a> that the \u201cmove is designed to improve the overall Live consumption experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does that actually mean in real terms? It could be a few things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Better quality live streams<\/strong>: The idea is that users with an established audience might produce better streams<\/li><li><strong>Spam and scam prevention<\/strong>: Raising the threshold could block spam accounts from going live before redirecting followers to scam websites.<\/li><li><strong>Cutting costs<\/strong>: Live streaming infrastructure is expensive, and Meta might want to cut the costs associated with low viewership streams.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift also brings Instagram in line with rivals. <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-add-my-music-to-tiktok-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a> also requires 1,000 followers for live streaming, while <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-youtube-content-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a> requires 50 subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>A downside for creators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the bigger problems was the lack of proper warning. Many creators woke up to find they could no longer live stream, without any time to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a smaller artist or independent musician, that hurts. Live streaming is often a go-to way to share updates, connect with fans in real time, or promote new releases casually. Now, that option is off the table unless you pass the threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Private accounts can\u2019t go live at all, meaning that these users can no longer chat with their followers for fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019re just getting started and trying to grow your audience, Instagram just made that journey harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>How many people are affected?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A huge chunk of Instagram\u2019s user base is impacted. According to estimates shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2025\/08\/01\/new-instagram-rule-cuts-off-live-broadcasts-for-small-accounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9to5Mac<\/a>, between 74% and 87% of users may no longer be eligible to live stream. That\u2019s around 1.7 billion people of Instagram\u2019s 2 billion users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, users have taken to social media to criticise smaller users who previously enjoyed using Instagram Live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Final thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Instagram\u2019s new rules are a big blow to smaller creators.
