{"id":104949,"date":"2025-06-19T11:22:59","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/?p=104949"},"modified":"2025-06-19T11:23:03","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:23:03","slug":"trump-extends-tiktoks-us-ban-deadline-for-a-third-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/trump-extends-tiktoks-us-ban-deadline-for-a-third-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump extends TikTok\u2019s US ban deadline for a third time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 style=\"user-select: auto;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; user-select: auto;\">TikTok is given another lifeline in the US as President Trump grants a fresh 90-day extension.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>TikTok\u2019s ban is on pause- again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After being <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tiktoks-u-s-ban-is-reportedly-delayed-by-trump-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rumoured<\/a> last week, the White House has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tiktok-ban-delayed-trump-third-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that President Donald Trump has extended TikTok\u2019s sale or ban deadline in the US for a third time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump initially led talks to ban <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/can-i-add-my-music-to-tiktok-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a> from the US <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tiktok-will-be-banned-on-us-app-stores-from-sunday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back in 2020<\/a>, citing national security concerns over the app\u2019s Chinese ownership. This was then signed by his successor, former President Joe Biden. Now President for a second time, Trump is trying to prevent its ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law requires TikTok\u2019s parent company ByteDance to <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tiktok-court-date-seemingly-no-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sell its US operations to an American company or face a ban<\/a>. The original deadline was set for January 19. That was <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tiktok-75-day-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushed back<\/a> 75 days to early April, before being extended by <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/tiktok-deadline-extended-again-us-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75 days again<\/a> to June 19. Now, a new 90-day extension will set the new deadline for mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Still no deal in sight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>ByteDance and Oracle were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/688252\/tiktok-ban-trump-extension-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> close to an agreement in April. However, Trump\u2019s tariffs fueled US-China trade tensions- throwing a spanner in the works and there has been little news of a <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/who-is-going-to-buy-tiktok-in-the-u-s-a-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">potential deal<\/a> being on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/will-tiktoks-us-deadline-be-extended-yet-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously expressed<\/a> he had a \u201cwarm spot\u201d for the app back in May, and the White House\u2019s most recent communication doubles down on this. In a statement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>\u201cAs he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3>So, what\u2019s next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As for what lies ahead, Trump is still holding out for a deal to ensure \u201cthe American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure\u201d. Meanwhile analysts have begun to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cwyqjepq2e1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismiss the idea<\/a> that there is any real threat of a ban while Trump is in charge, and lawyers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/688252\/tiktok-ban-trump-extension-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questioned<\/a> whether Trump\u2019s repeated extensions are even legal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, TikTok is safe in the US until mid-September.
