The Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) have revealed an income of Rs700 crores for the 2024-25 fiscal year (roughly $81.5 million USD at the time of writing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers are good, but what is most impressive about them is that it represents growth of 42% from the previous fiscal year. What&#8217;s more, the impressive growth shines a positive light on India&#8217;s music industry after <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/india-digital-music-revenue-drop-2024\/#:~:text=India's%20music%20industry%20experienced%20a,million%20(INR%2053%20billion).\">EY India and FICCI&#8217;s report showed drops in the country&#8217;s music revenue in 2024<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fgNkNpuhQl\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/india-digital-music-revenue-drop-2024\/\">India&#8217;s digital music revenue slips in 2024 despite paid streaming growth<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;India&#8217;s digital music revenue slips in 2024 despite paid streaming growth&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/india-digital-music-revenue-drop-2024\/embed\/#?secret=fgNkNpuhQl\" data-secret=\"fgNkNpuhQl\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why are Performance Royalties shooting up against the country&#8217;s larger market trends? The IPRS says that the growth was &#8220;mainly due to exceptional growth in streaming collections&#8221;, which have helped to push India to 23rd in CISAC&#8217;s global rankings of collecting societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The streaming collections have been helped by international services like <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-youtube-content-id\/\">YouTube<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/spotify#:~:text=You%20can%20distribute%20unlimited%20music,listeners%20all%20around%20the%20world.\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-apple-music\/\">Apple Music<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/get-music-on-amazon-music\/\">Amazon Music<\/a> operating in the region. Despite the popularity of local streaming services like Gaana and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-get-my-music-on-jiosaavn-for-free\/\">JioSaavn<\/a>, they haven&#8217;t yet signed deals with the IPRS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, two of India&#8217;s local services &#8211; Wynk Music and Hungama &#8211; have shut down in the last year. These service shutdowns, alongside restrictions on free streaming offerings, have helped to slow down India&#8217;s recorded music revenues in the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the growth is incredible, CISAC report that India&#8217;s Performance Royalties are &#8220;well below its potential for such a large market&#8221;. CISAC add, currently: &#8220;[The] main problem lies in the low penetration of paid or premium streaming services.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What are Performing Rights royalties?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Performing Rights royalties differ from the royalties generated by a sound recording, like a stream on a song. They are generated by the actual playing (or performance) of a composition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, they are royalties that are due to the composer or writer of a piece of music when their composition is played or performed.
