Announced yesterday, the platform is rolling out <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/more-ways-to-discover-new-content-and-creators-you-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new tools<\/a> that let users personalize their feed. With expanded filtering tools, topic controls, and educational support, TikTok is giving its users greater control over the content they see &#8211; and don\u2019t see.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Manage Topics: Tune your feed by category<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Manage Topics <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/06\/03\/tiktok-rolls-out-ai-powered-smart-keyword-filters-to-limit-content-you-dont-want-to-see\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began piloting<\/a> in the US last year, and is now available globally. It allows users to choose how often they see content from TikTok\u2019s top categories, including: Creative Arts, Dance, Fashion &amp; Beauty, Food &amp; Drinks, Health &amp; Fitness, Humor, Funny, Travel, Nature, and Sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find the Manage Topics feature via two routes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Go to Settings > Content Preferences > Manage Topics<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Tap Share on a video in your FYP > choose Why this video > select Adjust your For You > tap Manage Topics<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Following these steps will then let you adjust a slider for each category, influencing how much of it appears in their feed.TikTok clarifies this won\u2019t \u201celiminate any topics entirely\u201d, but it will affect how frequently they\u2019re recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/p16-va-tiktok.ibyteimg.com\/obj\/musically-maliva-obj\/3bd886d7cba820653124beb21fb79b91.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Image credits: <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/more-ways-to-discover-new-content-and-creators-you-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>Smart Keyword Filtering, powered by AI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok\u2019s existing Keyword Filtering tool just got smarter. Originally designed to block specific words from appearing across any content you may see, it has helped users restrict 200 million words from feeds around the world. Now, TikTok is integrating AI to filter additional similar keywords, including synonyms found in captions, hashtags, and video descriptions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok expects the feature to become more accurate \u201cas more people use it over time\u201d. TikTok will also let you see which additional AI-powered keywords are being blocked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming months, users will be able to select or deselect these words, and TikTok will double the number of keywords that users can filter to 200 per user. Explanation videos will also roll out soon, as part of TikTok\u2019s ongoing efforts to help users understand how and why they get recommended specific content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3>What could this mean for creators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although greater user control helps users see content they\u2019re genuinely interested in, it could create new challenges for discovery. As people tailor their feeds to specific interests, content outside of those preferences might see reduced reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TikTok emphasizes that no topic will be entirely eliminated, but the reality is that creators may face new hurdles in reaching audiences beyond their <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-to-leverage-your-niche-as-an-independent-artist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">niche<\/a>. This could make it harder to break through the algorithmic, especially if your content doesn\u2019t fall into someone\u2019s preferred categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For music makers and content creators, understanding your audience is more important than ever. Despite this seeming like bad news, it also presents an opportunity. These tools could help creators lean into their existing audience, tailoring content accordingly to keep these fans engaged.
