The undeniable hit that is at the top of everyone’s favourites playlist has finally hit a billion streams on Spotify.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spotify<\/a>‘s Billions Club is an exclusive club (playlist) for the tracks that have been streamed more than 1 billion times on Spotify. Less than 1,000 tracks currently make up the playlist, but the latest entry makes the most sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a song adored by all, which never fails to bring joy to listeners. In fact, it’s a surprise that it has taken this long for it reach the accolade of 1 billion streams on Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist behind the track responded to the news, saying: “So who would’ve believed after all these years [my track] has had a billion streams on Spotify. How amazing. Thank you for listening and lots of love and I’ll see you all soon.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many of us, we probably will see them soon. In fact, many of us have been seeing them in unexpected places for years. Which is likely a large part of the reason their track has reached the exclusive billions club, so many years after the song was originally released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On release in 1987, the track reached the top of the charts in over 20 countries. It was a defining song of the period but faded from the public consciousness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was until the late 2000s when the song found new popularity online. The song became shared more and more until it became a cultural phenomenon that exists to this day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newfound popularity saw the artist nominated for MTV Europe Music Awards’ ‘Best Act Ever’ in 2008. The song has since been read out in the house of representatives, shared by Obama’s White House Twitter account, and used as a protest song against scientologists and the Westboro Baptist Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
