Here\u2019s what its terms really say about AI training and your content.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>SoundCloud and AI: What changed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Last February, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-soundcloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SoundCloud<\/a> quietly <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/09\/soundcloud-changes-policies-to-allow-ai-training-on-user-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">updated<\/a> its Terms of Use. The new clause stated that user content could be used to \u201cinform, train, develop or serve as input to artificial intelligence or machine intelligence technologies or services as part of and for providing the services\u201d. The update was spotted by tech ethicist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ednewtonrex?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1920867088455135723%7Ctwgr%5Ee851e8145acd3ee433e8be0703b3961e20ad48e2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftechcrunch.com%2F2025%2F05%2F09%2Fsoundcloud-changes-policies-to-allow-ai-training-on-user-content%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ed Newton-Rex<\/a>, and quickly raised eyebrows across the music industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SoundCloud seems to claim the right to train on people&#39;s uploaded music in their terms. With many in the industry beginning to embrace AI, including <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/upload-your-music-to-spotify-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify\u2019s<\/a> AI remixing tool as part of its rumored \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/spotifys-new-music-pro-tier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Music Pro<\/a>\u2019 tier, it\u2019s understandable why this update has caused alarm among artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2XYTO6nrfh\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundcloud-launch-6-new-ai-music-creator-tools\/\">SoundCloud launch 6 new AI music creator tools<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;SoundCloud launch 6 new AI music creator tools&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/soundcloud-launch-6-new-ai-music-creator-tools\/embed\/#?secret=2XYTO6nrfh\" data-secret=\"2XYTO6nrfh\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Is SoundCloud using your music to train AI?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the wording of the new policy, SoundCloud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/664683\/soundcloud-denies-training-ai-with-user-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responded to these comments<\/a> by emphasizing that it \u201chas never used artist content to train AI models\u201d. It also highlighted that it does not allow third parties to use content uploaded to the platform for AI training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to SoundCloud, the new terms were meant to clarify how user content interacts with AI within the platform, such as powering personalized recommendations, fraud detection, and playlist generation. In fact, SoundCloud\u2019s current terms explicitly prohibit the use of licensed content for AI model training. However, the policy is less clear when it comes to unlicensed content- potentially leaving scope for AI use involving content that is unlicensed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Looking ahead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While SoundCloud maintained its current position on AI, it has left the door open for use of user content for AI training in the future. In a statement, the company said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cNo such use has taken place, and SoundCloud will introduce robust internal permissioning controls to govern any potential future use. Should we ever consider using user content to train generative AI models, we would introduce clear opt-out mechanisms in advance &#8211; at a minimum &#8211; and remain committed to transparency with our creator community.\u201d<\/p><cite>SoundCloud via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/664683\/soundcloud-denies-training-ai-with-user-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Verge<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This would position SoundCloud among a growing list of platforms to alter their AI policies. Platforms such as X, LinkedIn, and YouTube have recently updated their policies to allow third-parties to train AI based on user posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>A huge impact on the music industry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The concern within the industry isn\u2019t just about copyright. It also covers consent, control, and compensation for your works. Critics argue that users should be able to opt in to AI use of their work, rather than having to opt out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly though, many creatives believe they should be credited and compensated fairly if their content is used to train AI and produce generative content. Around the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/silent-album-ai-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">musicians<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/ascap-humans-first-ai-copyright-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rights organizations<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/generative-ai-threatens-music-creators-revenues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industry leaders<\/a> are pushing back against the idea of AI models freely using creative content without consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers has called for a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/ascap-humans-first-ai-copyright-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Humans First<\/a>\u2019 approach to AI governance, urging that copyrighted content adds billions of dollars to the US.
