The filing can be read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25491670-aubrey-graham-vs-umg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit starts by describing chilling incidents that followed the song\u2019s release: a drive-by shooting at Drake\u2019s property where a security guard was injured, and another intrusion where an individual tunneled under a wall with their bare hands and hurled racial slurs at the artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drake asserts that UMG actively \u201capproved, published, and launched a campaign to create a viral hit out of a rap track that falsely accuses Drake of being a pedophile and calls for violent retribution against him\u201d. In doing so, claiming that UMG released and promoted the track at the expense of Drake\u2019s reputation and personal safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, Lamar is not named as a defendant in this case. Instead, the legal battle focuses solely on UMG, accusing the label of monetising and distributing defamatory content despite being fully aware it was \u201cnot only false, but dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>UMG&#8217;s response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UMG wasted no time in <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/music\/news\/universal-music-slams-drake-illogical-lawsuit-kendrick-lamar-not-like-us-1236275344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refuting Drake\u2019s claims<\/a>, calling the lawsuit \u201cillogical\u201d. The company insists that it has and does not engage in defamation against any individual, and will \u201cvigorously defend this litigation to protect our people and our reputation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/music\/news\/universal-music-slams-drake-illogical-lawsuit-kendrick-lamar-not-like-us-1236275344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cNot only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist &#8211; let alone Drake &#8211; is <strong>illogical<\/strong>.\u201d<\/a><\/p><cite>UMG spokesperson speaking to Variety<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>UMG emphasised their extensive investment in Drake\u2019s career, tirelessly helping him to achieve \u201chistoric commercial and personal financial success\u201d. UMG also stated that Drake has previously used UMG to distribute his own back-and-forth rap battles of a similar nature to express his feelings about other artists, highlighting the hypocritical and nonsensical nature of Drake\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, UMG accused Drake of weaponising legal proceedings in order to silence an artist\u2019s creative expression, whilst seeking damages from UMG for distributing that artist\u2019s music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Fan speculation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Speculation suggests Drake\u2019s motives extend beyond this defamation case, as was apparent when Drake filed the <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/drake-files-claims-against-umg-spotify-and-iheartradio-over-kendrick-lamars-not-like-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initial proceedings<\/a> in November. With his current deal with UMG nearing its end, the lawsuit hints at these underlying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2025\/01\/16\/drake-lawsuit-chatter-umg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tensions<\/a>. Drake alleges that UMG supported Lamar\u2019s track to devalue Drake\u2019s brand and his music in order to leverage this and \u201cforce Drake to sign a new deal on terms more favorable to UMG\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the outcome, Drake\u2019s relationship with UMG appears strained beyond repair.
