This model aims to reward \u201ctrue music\u201d genuine artistry through a more equitable revenue-sharing process, while minimising fraudulent activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This \u2018artist-centric\u2019 system was thought up by Universal Music\u2019s Lucian Grainge, in a bid towards the next era of <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-streaming-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Streaming 2.0<\/a>. Deezer\u2019s latest extension applies to publishing rights in France, marking a pivotal shift in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key features of Deezer\u2019s artist-centric model include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>User-centric cap<\/strong>: Limits a single user\u2019s impact on royalty splits to reduce artificial plays.<\/li><li><strong>Boosting real artists<\/strong>: Tracks with at least 1,000 streams from 500 unique subscribers each month get their royalty boosted by two. This also applies to songs that are actively searched for, rewarding artists with active, engaged audiences.<\/li><li><strong>Excluding noise<\/strong>: Functional sounds and tracks with noise are excluded from royalty calculations, replaced by Deezer\u2019s catalogue.<\/li><li><strong>Catalogue cleaning<\/strong>: Removal of fraudulent or inactive content that hasn\u2019t been listened to in 12 months.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3>What this means for artists and songwriters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these initiatives signal a positive step for artists aiming to build loyal fanbases, a better user experience for fans, as well as tackling fraudulent streaming. However, songwriters &#8211; especially those who are not also the recording artist &#8211; may face <a href=\"https:\/\/completemusicupdate.com\/deezer-is-reworking-the-way-it-allocates-royalties-again-as-sacem-signs-up-to-its-artist-centric-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenges<\/a> given that they have little or no control over any activity that could drive fan engagement to recordings of their songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the breakdown of things to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fairer distribution for creators with authentic fan engagement.<\/li><li>However, superfan-heavy artists may find their revenue capped unfairly.<\/li><li>But, it does target a reduction in fraudulent activities that distort royalty pools.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Reduced revenue or removal for tracks with low engagement.<\/li><li>Reduced revenue or removal for cover versions adversely affect songwriters with the publishing rights.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics have labelled these changes as a<a href=\"https:\/\/completemusicupdate.com\/deezer-is-reworking-the-way-it-allocates-royalties-again-as-sacem-signs-up-to-its-artist-centric-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> \u201creverse Robin Hood\u201d<\/a>, as they disproportionately benefit industry superstars and big catalogue holders, such as Universal Music.
