The update promised to unify car dashboard and screen experiences, creating a seamless infotainment experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/30\/24332162\/apple-next-gen-carplay-not-available-2024-porsche-aston-martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> incremental changes<\/a>, such as updated navigation directions appearing in instrument clusters of select Polestar, Porsche, and Lincoln, the grand vision remains unrealised. Even cars like the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, which feature expansive dashboard screens seemingly tailor-made for the new CarPlay still lack the promised functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Project abandoned or is it still a work in progress?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>Speculation about the delay now points to potential roadblocks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Resistance from automakers<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple has faced reluctance from car manufacturers who are unwilling to give up control of their vehicle systems in favour of Apple\u2019s software. For instance, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola K\u00e4llenius stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/6\/7\/23157963\/apple-carplay-next-gen-screen-car-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple will not take over all of its car screens<\/a>. This hesitation reflects a broader challenge: automakers want to retain ownership of the driving experience rather than cede control to Apple\u2019s tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>Technical hurdles<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike a typical software update, next-gen CarPlay requires deep hardware and software integration, making it only available to new vehicles that adopt this. This means existing car models cannot simply use the system, limiting its ability to reach the market<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\"><li><strong>Shifting priorities at Apple?<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple has reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/vehicle-tech\/car-infotainment\/apple-promised-us-carplay-2-0-in-2024-but-it-hasnt-arrived-yet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abandoned<\/a> its elusive Apple Car project. Failing to respond to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2025\/01\/01\/next-generation-carplay-didnt-arrive-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media inquiries<\/a> about Apple CarPlay throughout 2024 has fuelled concerns that it may have met the same fate as the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these doubts, there are glimmers of hope. Redesigned icons appeared in iOS 18.2, launched in late November, suggesting that Apple hasn\u2019t completely abandoned the project. The dashboard-spanning screens in cars like the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus indicates that some manufacturers are keeping the door open for Apple\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Waiting for the green light<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple\u2019s next-gen CarPlay promised to redefine the future of in-car technology. Yet, Apple may be at a standstill when it comes to bridging tech and automotive worlds.
