Here\u2019s how it might affect artists and their revenue.\n<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Ad-supported video streaming: A growing trend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ad-supported video-on-demand (VOD) streaming has continued to surge in 2024. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antenna.live\/post\/antennas-2024-top-subscription-insights-ad-supported-streaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antenna\u2019s Q3 report<\/a>, 43% of all subscriptions to services offering ad-free tiers were ad-supported in the US. The growth is significant as ad-supported tiers grew by nearly 50%, while ad-free subscriptions dropped by 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Netflix\u2019s ad-supported subscriptions accounted for 44% of new subscribers since Q3 in 2023, with this figure remaining high for both HBO Max (39%) and Disney+ (62%). Across the board, ad-supported VOD subscribers increased by 11% over the past year and 15% since 2022. Increased <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/music-piracy-in-europe-down-75-since-2017-is-online-piracy-flattening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TV piracy<\/a> and competition from short-form video content are likely to have also played a role in driving consumers away from paid subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Could this trend influence music streaming?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The music streaming market has also shown signs of change, with slowing subscription growth among major platforms. Sony Music\u2019s CEO has even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2024\/05\/30\/rob-stringer-freemium-streaming-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called for charges<\/a> on ad-supported listening in well-established markets to address the slower premium subscriber growth, and in order to reach their longer-term subscription revenue targets. Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2024\/12\/19\/spotify-subscribers-data-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one report<\/a> suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/upload-your-music-to-spotify-for-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a> has experienced a decline in premium subscribers in the US, the world\u2019s largest music market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Spotify\u2019s ad-supported tier is thriving. By Q3 2024, Spotify\u2019s ad-supported monthly active users (MAUs) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/813787\/spotify-ad-supported-monthly-active-users\/#:~:text=Spotify's%20ad%2Dsupported%20monthly%20active%20users%20reached%20a%20record%20high,giant's%20trend%20of%20consistent%20growth.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hit a record 402 million<\/a>, an 11% increase from the previous year. While this maintains Spotify\u2019s consistent growth, it could signify current challenges to monetise its ad-supported users. Highlighting this, Spotify\u2019s premium average revenue per user (ARPU) has been declining since 2017, sitting at \u20ac4.39 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why this matters for artists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ad-supported streaming\u2019s growth impacts not only streaming platforms, but also the revenue that artists earn. While estimating streaming revenues is <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/how-much-music-streaming-services-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no easy feat<\/a>, ad-supported listening typically generates less revenue per stream compared to premium subscriptions. For instance, China\u2019s popular <a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/what-is-tencent-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tencent Music<\/a>\u2019s MAUs have dropped by <a href=\"https:\/\/musically.com\/2024\/09\/20\/report-claims-most-music-streaming-services-are-losing-listeners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">52 million <\/a>over two years, but its paid subscribers grew by 34.3 million. For Spotify, premium subscribers grew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/244995\/number-of-paying-spotify-subscribers\/#:~:text=How%20many%20paid%20subscribers%20does,than%20doubled%20since%20early%202019.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10% year-on-year in Q3 2024<\/a>, reaching 252 million. While this indicates resilience, the proportion of premium subscribers and MAUs is shrinking in the Western markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this could be offset by global growth as streaming users shift towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midiaresearch.com\/blog\/q3-streaming-trends-why-spotifys-growth-in-the-global-south-matters-for-the-music-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">non-Western markets<\/a>. Spotify\u2019s user base in regions like Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Rest of the World has expanded significantly, growing from 19% to 33% of Spotify\u2019s global users. These regions, though promising in volume, often result in lower ARPU which could negatively impact artists\u2019 streaming revenues. Still, increased subscription growth in these markets could help the continued growth of streaming revenues globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What&#8217;s next for streaming?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Streaming platforms are adapting to achieve long-term profitability goals.
