Fans are feeling this, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2024\/dec\/01\/entertainment-industry-accused-of-fleecing-fans-as-uk-ticket-mark-ups-reach-41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Observer<\/em> analysis<\/a> showing that fans are paying mark-ups as high as 41% over a ticket\u2019s face value. But these increases aren\u2019t necessarily translating into higher profits for artists, instead there\u2019s a \u201ccost of touring\u201d crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>The true cost of touring<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2kdxlv8x05o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">touring has become more expensive<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Transport<\/strong>: Rising fuel prices and a post-Brexit shortage of drivers has pushed up premiums.<\/li><li><strong>Freight costs<\/strong>: Large-scale tours, like Taylor Swift\u2019s <em>Eras Tour<\/em>, can require up to 50 trucks, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/rock-roll-and-the-road-how-trucker-guys-and-gals-bring-the-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insurance of up to \u00a33.8 million per truck<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Accommodation<\/strong>: Hotel prices have <a href=\"https:\/\/modernhospitality.co.uk\/hotel-prices-have-nearly-doubled-in-five-years-operators-need-to-stand-out-from-the-pack-and-ensure-impeccable-service\/#:~:text=Hotel%20prices%20have%20nearly%20doubled,ensure%20impeccable%20service%20%7C%20Modern%20Hospitality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubled<\/a> in the last five years, needed for the crew.<\/li><li><strong>Catering and stage equipment<\/strong>: Both are essential but increasingly expensive.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These costs leave artists with minimal profit margins. Despite price hikes, a large proportion of revenue is swallowed by production expenses. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukmusic.org\/news\/this-is-music-report-reveals-sector-contributes-record-7-6-billion-to-uk-economy\/#:~:text=20.11.,industry%20makes%20to%20the%20economy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK Music&#8217;s 2024 report<\/a> argues this is only making touring more difficult, particularly for smaller artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"streaming-role\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"tmaiSE4HPq\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/uk-music-industry-is-thriving-but-still-faces-challenges\/\">UK Music Industry is Thriving, But Still Faces Challenges<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;UK Music Industry is Thriving, But Still Faces Challenges&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/uk-music-industry-is-thriving-but-still-faces-challenges\/embed\/#?secret=tmaiSE4HPq\" data-secret=\"tmaiSE4HPq\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"ticket-fees\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<h4>Streaming&#8217;s role<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Streaming has also affected artists\u2019 revenue streams, dropping significantly since the days of vinyls and CDs. With many musicians earning just <a href=\"https:\/\/musiciansunion.org.uk\/working-performing\/recording-and-broadcasting\/musician-royalties\/music-streaming-royalties#:~:text=At%20least%2092%25%20of%20musicians,work%20back%20in%20your%20hands.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5% of their income from streaming<\/a>, many rely on tours for profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Ticket fees rise: the hidden costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ticket fees are something we all hate seeing slapped onto the price of concert tickets once we reach the checkout. Whilst ticket fees have always been around, these fees have risen from adding 18% onto the face value of the tickets, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2024\/dec\/01\/entertainment-industry-accused-of-fleecing-fans-as-uk-ticket-mark-ups-reach-41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">averages exceeding 25%<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance a \u00a320 ticket for a February concert at the O2 Academy incurred a 41% markup, consisting of a booking fee, venue levy fee, a processing fee, and a fee for having a mobile ticket. Ticketmaster have defended these fees as necessary to cover operational costs and \u2018prevent ticket bots\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the music industry \u201cmay be the worst example of rampant commercialism,\u201d this problem also extends to theatre, sports, and tourist attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"dynamic-pricing\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cTickets for popular gigs can be eye-wateringly expensive, and it\u2019s no surprise consumers feel taken for a ride when they see sneaky extra fees for booking and processing added at the checkout.\u201d<\/p><cite>Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, pleased with the new consumer protection laws.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3>Dynamic pricing is a problem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic pricing, where tickets prices fluctuate based on demand, has angered fans. Ticketmaster recently used this for Oasis\u2019s reunion tour, frustrating fans that queued for hours to find that standing tickets that started at \u00a3135 rose to \u00a3355.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice has prompted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-launches-investigation-into-ticketmaster-over-oasis-concert-sales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation<\/a> into Ticketmaster\u2019s practices. The CMA is examining whether:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ticketmaster engaged in unfair commercial practices prohibited under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.<\/li><li>Consumers were given clear and timely information explaining the tickets were subject to dynamic pricing and how it would operate.<\/li><li>Consumers were pressured into quick decisions to buy tickets, and at a higher price than they understood.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that fans are treated fairly when they buy tickets, which is why we\u2019ve launched this investigation. It\u2019s clear that many people felt they had a bad experience and were surprised by the price of their tickets at check-out.\u201d<\/p><cite>Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2024-10-24\/debates\/A02477CC-9E62-43A9-B8B4-AA1A77CF8DE0\/SecondaryTicketingMarket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Speaking in Parliament<\/a>, Emma Foody, Cramlington and Killingworth MP, vented her frustration at the ridiculous scheme. Likening it to being in a supermarket where people would be furious if the price suddenly changed when you got to the checkout, she questioned, \u201cwhy should we be any less furious when it happens on a website?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"ticket-reselling\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic pricing exploits fans\u2019 emotional attachment to artists. As Gideon Gottfried, Pollstar\u2019s European Editor notes, many make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2kdxlv8x05o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;irrational decisions\u201d<\/a> to secure tickets for their favourite artists, distorting the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Ticket reselling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1525547719571-a2d4ac8945e2?w=500&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop&amp;q=60&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;ixid=M3wxMjA3fDB8MHxzZWFyY2h8MTF8fGNvbXB1dGVyfGVufDB8fDB8fHwy\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"453\"\/><figcaption><em>image credits: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@wasdrew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andras Vas<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondary ticketing platforms worsen the problem, often selling tickets way over face value. A \u00a350 ticket for an Olivia Rodrigo concert in 2025 was listed for <a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2024-10-24\/debates\/A02477CC-9E62-43A9-B8B4-AA1A77CF8DE0\/SecondaryTicketingMarket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a32,573<\/a> on Viagogo- a 5,146% markup.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkably, one in five tickets end up on secondary platforms, costing consumers an estimated \u00a3145 million annually. Touts and bots dominate these markets, buying tickets in bulk and inflating prices, unfortunately pricing many genuine fans out of the \u201cevents and experiences they love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts are underway to address this, as the Labour government vowed to tackle ticket resales. Debated in Westminster in October 2024, the government is clearly trying to start the conversation on restricting ticket reselling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Backing the government&#8217;s plans to protect fans against ticket exploitation through new laws, O2 is also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.virginmediao2.co.uk\/tickets-touts-costing-music-fans-an-extra-145m-per-year-o2-issues-warning-to-concertgoers-not-all-resale-platforms-are-made-equal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ctired of professional ticket touts abusing the ticket marketplace and stealing tickets out of fans\u2019 hands, only to immediately relist them at inflated prices.\u201d<\/a> Implementing its own measures to block bots, it prevented 50,000 suspected bots from entering its Priority platform in just six weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThis has been a priority focus for the CMA for several years, having previously taken enforcement action and recommended changes to improve the secondary tickets market. We are committed to working closely with government to tackle the longstanding challenges in the ticket market.\u201d<\/p><cite>Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the EU has introduced measures to protect against ticket reselling. These include capping resale prices and mandating transparency in ticket availability, a strategy that the UK could consider adopting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"small-steps\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-routenote-blog wp-block-embed-routenote-blog\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"NS76NqmM5r\"><a href=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/finally-the-eu-is-fighting-ticket-scalpers-for-live-music\/\">Finally, the EU is fighting ticket scalpers for live music<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Finally, the EU is fighting ticket scalpers for live music&#8221; &#8212; RouteNote Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/routenote.com\/blog\/finally-the-eu-is-fighting-ticket-scalpers-for-live-music\/embed\/#?secret=NS76NqmM5r\" data-secret=\"NS76NqmM5r\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>Small steps towards consumer protection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From April 2025, new consumer protection laws will require ticket platforms to display all fees upfront, aiming to eliminate \u201cdrip pricing.\u201d Moreover, the CMA is working with the government to improve transparency and regulate resale practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the surge in ticket prices seemingly benefits no one but ticket companies and resellers. While fans struggle to afford tickets and artists battle rising costs, the industry\u2019s profiteers continue to exploit fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s initial steps are promising, but real change will require sustained pressure from fans, industry advocates, and the CMA.
