The allegations accuse UMG of unethical practices, aimed at boosting Kendrick\u2019s track at Drake\u2019s humiliating expense. Key points from the filing include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"denial\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Manipulating Spotify Recommendations<\/strong>&#8211; UMG allegedly offered Spotify lower licensing rates in exchange for recommending <em>Not Like Us<\/em> in searches unrelated to Lamar or his music. Also suggesting that UMG and Spotify have \u201clong-standing, symbiotic business relationship\u201d, with both businesses benefiting from each other\u2019s success.<\/li><li><strong>Artificially Boosting <em>Not Like Us\u2019<\/em> Popularity<\/strong>&#8211; The filings also claim UMG employed bots to inflate streaming numbers, and used influencers to promote the song on social media. As a result, deceiving consumers into believing the song was more popular than it actually was.<\/li><li><strong>Concealment<\/strong>&#8211; Drake claims UMG actively concealed these efforts by terminating employees \u201cassociated with or perceived as having loyalty to Drake\u201d.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4>UMG&#8217;s Denial<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With both artists signed to subdivisions of UMG, why would UMG want to boost Kendrick\u2019s song in the first place? According to the petition, UMG\u2019s internal structure means there are financial incentives for executives based on UMG divisions like Interscope, which released <em>Not Like Us<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/drake-lawsuit-umg-d36b719ed62009c01f09d949b1032c25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UMG swiftly rejected the accusations<\/a>, labelling the suggestion that they would undermine their own artist for the benefit of another as completely absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"texas-filings\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u2018The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue. We employ the highest ethical practices in our marketing and promotional campaigns. No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.\u2019<\/p><cite>UMG commenting on the accusations<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4>Texas Filings and Defamation Claims<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Drake followed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalmusicnews.com\/2024\/11\/26\/drake-umg-spotify-not-like-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another filing against UMG in Texas<\/a>, this time involving iHeartRadio. His company alleges UMG funneled payments to the broadcaster in a \u201cpay-to-play\u201d scheme to boost Lamar\u2019s airplay. While evidence directly implicating payments went to iHeartRadio is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0rgl497k59o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">currently lacking<\/a>, Drake\u2019s team argues it&#8217;s the most likely recipient given its market dominance in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a name=\"legal-meaning\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>Most notably, Drake accuses UMG of defamation on the basis that the company knew that <em>Not Like Us<\/em> labelled him as a \u201ccertified pedophile\u201d. He argues the company could have refused to release the track or edited the offensive material, but instead chose to amplify the song to drive \u201cconsumer hysteria, and\u2026 massive revenues\u201d for UMG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What Do These Legal Moves Mean?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These actions are not yet formal lawsuits, but are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/drake-umg-spotify-schemed-boost-kendrick-not-like-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpre-action\u201d petitions<\/a> designed to obtain information that could support a proper lawsuit. This follows earlier conflicts with UMG, after they struck down his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/lists\/best-moments-drake-100-gigs-dump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>100 Gigs<\/em> <\/a>project of unreleased footage and music which was released to his website in August of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin Casini, an entertainment lawyer, questioned Drake\u2019s endgame, noting that standardised recording agreements often give the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/experts-on-drakes-legal-filings-against-umg-1235182844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;opportunity to cure any breach of terms&#8221;<\/a>, limiting Drake\u2019s potential leverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether or not these petitions evolve into fully-fledged lawsuits, they underscore the cultural and personal impact of <em>Not Like Us<\/em>.
