Surprise! The most popular streaming service in the world now has the most popular streaming app in the world.

Thanks to a report from App Annie we now know that Spotify’s mobile app is the most popular app worldwide. Spotify take the place of the original forerunner Pandora in the past year putting Spotify in lead position for revenue, active users and app downloads.

Spotify have seen their best year yet despite a number of new players in the ‘music streaming war’, notably Tidal and Apple Music. Rather than letting new competitors discourage Spotify they have carried on, bringing numerous new features to the service including Discover Weekly and ‘In Residence‘ sessions with artists and music experts.

Spotify have been quiet on the number of users for the past few months, presumably waiting to announce their expected 100 million users by the end of the year, their last reports put them a few million behind Pandora. Whilst Pandora still dominates in the US pretty much everywhere else has taken preference over Spotify, including most of Europe, Australia, Canada, Brazil and Mexico.

Expect an even better year for Spotify in 2016 as the service continues to expand as the biggest music streaming service  with plans to bring exclusive content to premium users, In Residence sessions being the first partially exclusive content.
