Spotify Says “They’ve never seen anything like this” as the new stars debut single explodes.

The debut single from Olivia Rodrigo has taken over the pop world since its release last Friday (Jan 8th). The release has dominated social media and streaming services with its powerful songwriting and emotive yet powerful vocals.

‘Drivers License’ has elevated Rodrigo as one of the worlds most promising pop stars and the debut single is already smashing records, particularly on Spotify. The streaming service confirmed on Monday (Jan 11th) that ‘Drivers License’ set the platforms record for most streams in a day for a non-holiday song, with over 17.01m global streams.

With the pop world having a slow start to the year (arguably due to an intense holiday rush and of course the ongoing pandemic) Olivia’s track has managed to craft its own space in the void. As Spotify’s Global Hits lead Becky Bass explains: “I truly do think this is just a lightning-in-a-bottle moment that sort of brought together a number of factors in a way that they haven’t really been brought together recently.” She continues: “I can’t say that the pop audience wasn’t hungry for a big pop song as well.”
