The Indian Music Industry has launched India’s first Top 20 Singles Chart that tracks the most popular international music being streamed in India.

The Indian Music Industry has begun showcasing the most popular international songs right now in India with the launch of an International Top 20 Singles Chart.

The IMI International Top 20 Singles Chart is the first international real-time chart system to be launched in India. Barcelona-based music technology company BMAT gathers data collected from Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music, the three leading streaming services in India.

The IMI, an IFPI affiliate, is a body which protects the Indian record industry’s interests. Representatives from record labels including Times Music, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group will review the Top 20, which is updated every Monday.

Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music Group India, said: “Warner Music Group India is excited to be involved with this project. Exponential growth of smart phones coupled with a plethora of streaming services has taken international recorded music to the remotest part of India.

“International music today is no longer a metro or city centric genre, it’s pan India, and the IMI International Charts will be a true representation of what India listens to.”

As the chart is comprised of Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music streaming data, it doesn’t take into account local Indian digital service providers such as RouteNote partner JioSaavn. The top five songs on the Top 20 Singles chart for the week ending 21 June 2021 are:

  1. BTS – Butter
  2. Dua Lipa – Levitating
  3. Lil Nas X – MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)
  4. Justin Bieber – Peaches (feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon)
  5. Olivia Rodrigo – good 4 u

Lewis Morrison, Head of Global Charts and Certifications at IFPI, said: “The introduction of the IMI International Top 20 Singles Chart is a great milestone for music in India and is an important step in the development of further charts to capture the full extent of India’s unique music culture and the vibrant and growing music industry in the market.”

Spotify meanwhile has just released its first Spotify Single from India, with producer DJ Snake remixing Sri Lankan singer Dhee’s track “Enjoy Enjaami.”
