Deezer have nabbed a new hire from Spotify in the shape of Pascal De Mul, bringing with him 5 years of experience working on Spotify partnerships.
Pascal De Mul joins Deezer as chief partnerships officer to build on their many partnerships and deals with other companies. De Mul already has 5 years worth of experience managing partnerships for music streaming services at Spotify before leaving for a development role on public transport app Trafi.
Deezer brought De Mul back into the music industry for his talent and experience, hoping to strengthen established partnerships whilst venturing into new opportunities. Del Mul said himself: “I will be sitting within the management team representing partnerships, which shows how important those partners are for Deezer. Partnerships with Orange and other telcos have been instrumental in Deezer’s history, but going forward, for all the strategic decisions that the company is making, I will be sitting in there representing our partners.”
De Mul will also be involved in managing Deezer’s new relationships, for example their new partnerships with various football teams made just before the holidays. De Mul added: “I will be consolidating all of that and taking a holistic view of all the partnerships, making sure those partners are served well. But we would love to also go into new industries and new partnerships.
“Deezer has shown itself to be extremely friendly to partners, more than many of the other players in the space. The partnerships with telcos have been super successful for both parties, and all those telcos – Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone – are signing up again to extend those partnerships.”
In his new position De Mul also wants to look into new areas where Deezer can have an impact and open themselves up to new audiences. For example his interest in music hardware, as he said: “There are many opportunities for great innovation on the hardware side, in the automotive space and in the home – audio space for example. It’s been an area where many audio manufacturers and music services have struggled: now we have these huge databases of music available, how can you navigate them? Voice seems to be the missing link.”
He lists Amazon’s incredibly successful home speaker Alexa, which saw a 9x rise in sales this holidays, as one of the examples of this. De Mul says: “You see it in the amount of times people use Alexa for requesting music – it works well, and it’s a space where there is innovation to be done.”
De Mul also spoke about music in transport, particularly in modern cars, as well as potential partnerships in the future – including whether a partnership with another streaming service would ever happen. You can read the rest of the interview on Music Ally.
