The Irish singer of U2, Bono has said to a Senate subcommittee that he thinks we should thwart ISIS with comedy.

Speaking to a subcommittee of the Senate on Tuesday Bono shared his views during a discussion on the Middle East and the European refugee crisis. The 55-year-old singer, there on invite by the subcommittee chairman, explained that violence wasn’t working and that an alternative needs to be found.

“Don’t laugh. I think comedy should be deployed. It’s like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them, when they’re goose-stepping down the street, and it takes away their power.” Bono continued: “So, I’m suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer, and Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you.”

Bono confirmed to the committee that he wasn’t joking and was making a serious suggestion, perhaps not to the point of deploying famous comedians however. The Senate’s response  revealed that this was surprisingly something already in consideration as an alternative retaliation.

New Hampshire Democrat, Jeanne Shaheen said: “Actually, that’s not the first time I’ve heard experts on how do we counter violent extremism talk about that. It iss one of the things that I know we’re looking at.”

Bono, more known lately for his activism and involvement in politics than his successful music career, went on to discuss the refugee crisis, saying: “Aid in 2016 is not charity; it is national security. It could be the best bulwark we have against violent extremism.”
