YouTube is expanding it’s original content with new documentaries looking at some of the most influential musicians in the world.

The first music documentary to come from YouTube’s new push will release this Saturday. The first video from the Google owned proprietor of online videos will look at the internationally renowned producer Mark Ronson and his rise to fame to becoming one of the most famous musicians in the world.

The launch precedes a feature on legendary country musician Johnny Cash. ‘The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash’ releases on the 11th and explores the musician’s personal journey through the world of music as well as his struggles in his personal life. The documentary promises to be a colourful exploration into Cash’s vibrant life of victory and tragedy.

YouTube Music create Artist Spotlight stories which highlight notable artists in a short video, but these are their first feature-length features. YouTube haven’t announced any other feature-length documentaries for artists but it’s highly likely that we will see more if these are a success.

Both documentaries will be available to watch for free on YouTube as part of their YouTube Originals content. YouTube have stated that year-over-year views for their Originals have grown by 40% representing a good mandate for their own content.
