YouTube’s iOS app has received a new update that allows you to watch YouTube whilst multitasking on iPads.

It’s been a long time coming and something many iPad users have been waiting for, you can now multitask with the YouTube app. This means that with a simple swipe the video you’re watching will move to one side with a list of apps you can access on the other side.

There are two modes available with the app minimised: ‘slide over’ and ‘split screen’. With slide over you can briefly check apps by sliding YouTube aside to take up a third of the screen. Split view is for longer term use as it splits the screen in half with YouTube on one side and whichever compatible app you want to use on the other.

Strangely however the ‘picture in picture’ multitasking mode for iPads isn’t available in the new update for YouTube. Picture in picture mode is a multitasking option that shrinks videos into a small square whilst you use other apps so you can make more use of the screen if you don’t need or want to focus on the full image of a video. However those in the US with a YouTube Red subscription already have the option to watch in background mode which continues playing audio from YouTube videos when the app is minimised.

With the current update: Split View is compatible with the iPad Air 2, both iPad Pros, and the iPad mini 4. Slide over is compatible with the iPad Air and up, the iPad mini 2 and up, and both iPad Pros.
