Tesla look to expand beyond cars and spaceships as talks with figures and labels in the music industry about a music streaming service.

According to music industry sources renowned car-makers Tesla have spoken with all of the major labels about licensing a new music service. Whilst their plans aren’t entirely clear yet it seems that Tesla want a music service to offer as a bundle with their cars which already feature high-tech dashboards with an internet connection.

The sources who revealed Tesla’s supposed music plans say that they want to create a full service with multiple tiers to choose from. The puzzling thing about this announcement is why Tesla would invest so much in creating a new streaming service considering the host of alternatives available. Further, Tesla partnered with Spotify at the end of 2015 to offer Spotify Premium with their cars.

A Tesla spokesperson expanded slightly, saying: “We believe it’s important to have an exceptional in-car experience so our customers can listen to the music they want from whatever source they choose. Our goal is to simply achieve maximum happiness for our customers.”

The labels seem supportive of the idea however, stating that the more streaming services available the more variety the industry has to keep it from being pigeonholed into one or two services. Currently Spotify dominate with Apple in a decent 2nd place
